Virginia to California Car Shipping
Door-to-door cross-country auto transport from Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Richmond to San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, the Bay Area and the rest of California. In our records, the median trip took 6 days once loaded.
Virginia to California carries two kinds of move in Neptune Auto Transport's records. Relocations out of Northern Virginia spread across the whole of California, and a second stream of cars leaves Hampton Roads for San Diego, connecting two of the Navy's largest concentrations of ships and sailors.
Two kinds of move on this lane
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Northern Virginia | 47% |
| Hampton Roads | 27% |
| Richmond area | 12% |
| Charlottesville | 6% |
| Fredericksburg and Stafford | 4% |
| Other areas | 4% |
Northern Virginia supplied close to half of our pickups: Sterling, Chantilly, South Riding, Fairfax, Alexandria, Woodbridge and the towns along the Dulles corridor. Those cars went everywhere in California, and Northern Virginia to Orange County was the single most common pairing on the lane. Shipping from the Maryland side of Washington instead? Montgomery and Prince George’s counties supplied almost four in ten of the cars on our Maryland to California route.
Hampton Roads supplied more than a quarter: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Newport News and Yorktown. Those cars had a clear favorite destination. About four in ten Hampton Roads pickups went to San Diego County, the most common pairing for that region. Richmond and Charlottesville make up most of the rest.
Where Virginia cars go in California
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| San Diego County | 21% |
| Orange County | 19% |
| Los Angeles County | 18% |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 14% |
| Sacramento region | 8% |
| Central Valley | 8% |
| Central Coast (Monterey) | 6% |
| Inland Empire | 4% |
| Other areas | 2% |
Southern California took three in five deliveries. San Diego County led, including Coronado and Fallbrook, the town beside Camp Pendleton. Orange County and Los Angeles followed close behind. The Bay Area, Sacramento and the Central Valley took about three in ten, and Monterey on the Central Coast, home to the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute, appears more often than its size would suggest.
PCS and military moves from Virginia to California
Look at the two ends of this lane and the military pattern is plain. Hampton Roads is home to Naval Station Norfolk and the bases around it; Quantico and Fort Belvoir sit in Northern Virginia. In California, cars went to San Diego and Coronado, to Fallbrook beside Camp Pendleton, to Monterey and to the area around Beale Air Force Base.
Our records do not say who was moving on orders, and this lane does not peak in summer the way PCS season would suggest. It was busiest in the fall. So we treat service members as one important group of customers here rather than the whole story. If that is you, we offer a military discount, schedule pickup and delivery around your report dates, and meet you outside the gate when the installation does not admit a commercial carrier. See military vehicle transport and our guide to shipping a car for a PCS move.
How long does it take to ship a car from Virginia to California?
Based on our historical shipment data for this lane, the median loaded transit time was 6 days, and close to nine in ten shipments arrived within 4 to 8 days of pickup. Northern Virginia pickups ran to a 6-day median and Hampton Roads and Richmond pickups to 7. On the California side, San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and the Bay Area all landed within a day of each other.
The miles explain it. Northern Virginia to Los Angeles is about 2,650 miles and Norfolk to San Diego about 2,700. Most carriers run I-81 down the Shenandoah Valley, pick up I-40 in Tennessee and follow it west to Barstow, then turn south on I-15 for Southern California or head up through the Central Valley for the Bay Area and Sacramento. Before loading comes the pickup window, usually 2 to 5 business days from booking on standard service or 24 to 72 hours with expedited auto transport. These figures describe past shipments and are not a guaranteed delivery time.
When Virginians ship cars to California
This lane leans to the fall. In our records, September to December carried 43 percent of Virginia to California pickups, while January to April carried only 24 percent. Fall is also when the western high country starts to see snow, so a late-November or December shipment may lose a day to weather around Flagstaff or the Texas Panhandle. Half of our customers booked more than a week before pickup; for a fall move, two weeks' notice is sensible.
Registering the car once it arrives in California
California asks new residents to register a vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident, and most vehicles previously registered in another state need a California smog check first. Active-duty service members who keep their home-state registration are generally exempt. The California DMV sets the rules and has the details for your situation, so check with it before you arrive.
What Virginians ship to California
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 51% |
| SUVs and crossovers | 39% |
| Pickup trucks | 10% |
Every vehicle we moved on this lane was a car, an SUV or a pickup, and one in ten was a pickup truck. Most travel on an open carrier. On a trip that crosses the Mojave, enclosed transport keeps sun, sand and road grit off a classic, a new car with fresh paint, or anything you would rather not repaint.
What it costs to ship a car from Virginia to California
We do not publish a price band for this lane. Too few cars and SUVs moved on it in the last 24 months to band fairly, and prices in 2022 were well above later years, so an all-years average would overstate what you would pay today. What moves the price:
- Where in Virginia it starts. Northern Virginia sits close to I-81 and I-66. Hampton Roads adds the drive across the state first.
- Where in California it goes. Southern California is the most direct delivery. The Bay Area, Sacramento and Monterey add miles up the state.
- The vehicle. Pickups and full-size SUVs take more deck space than a sedan; an inoperable vehicle needs a winch.
- Open or enclosed. Enclosed costs substantially more, because the trailer holds fewer vehicles and the equipment is scarcer.
Our cross-country auto transport page covers how coast-to-coast moves are priced and scheduled.
Shipping east instead? Our page on car shipping from California to Virginia covers that lane. In our records, eastbound shipments have cost more at the median than westbound ones since 2023.
Before your pickup in Virginia
- Arrange a gate-side pickup if you live on base. Tell us the installation when you book and we will plan a meeting point outside.
- Check your HOA rules. Many Northern Virginia townhome communities do not allow a full-size carrier on their streets; a nearby lot is the usual fix.
- Remove your E-ZPass so it is not charged at tolls on the way west.
- Empty the car and photograph it. Our guide to preparing a car for shipping has the full list.
How these figures were calculated
These figures come from aggregated Neptune Auto Transport records of Virginia to California orders placed from June 2022 to April 2026, without voided orders. Areas are grouped by the first three digits of the ZIP code. Transit uses only shipments with a confirmed pickup and delivery date, from the day the car was loaded; none needed to be excluded on this lane. Percentages are rounded so each table sums to 100. Military towns are identified from ZIP codes alone, so no military share is stated. No individual shipment, customer or address is shown, and none of these figures guarantees a future price or delivery time.
