Newport News Auto Transport & Car Shipping
Door-to-door car shipping on the Peninsula, from the shipyard and Hilton Village north through Oyster Point and Denbigh.
Neptune Auto Transport arranges auto transport and car shipping to and from Newport News on open and enclosed carriers, door to door. We move cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles between Newport News and the other 47 contiguous states, with the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance verified before loading and one all-inclusive price agreed up front. Newport News is a long, narrow city on the Virginia Peninsula, and its shape has more effect on your pickup than most people expect.
A city about twenty-five miles long
Newport News runs along the James River for roughly twenty-five miles while staying only a few miles wide in most places. Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue form the spine, with I-64 running the length of the city and I-664 branching south toward the Monitor-Merrimac crossing. The practical consequence is that two Newport News addresses can be forty minutes apart in traffic. When you request a quote, the specific part of the city matters, so give the exact ZIP rather than just the city name.
Being on the Peninsula also means that reaching the Southside requires a tunnel. Carriers coming from Norfolk or Virginia Beach cross the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the Monitor-Merrimac, and both are congestion and height-restriction points. Drivers frequently sequence Peninsula work together, doing Newport News and Hampton in one pass, to avoid crossing twice.
The shipyard and the base
Newport News Shipbuilding is the city’s dominant industrial employer, and Fort Eustis, part of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, sits at the northern end. Between them they generate a steady flow of relocations that does not follow the usual summer moving pattern. Carriers cannot enter the base or the shipyard, so pickups are arranged at a public location nearby, typically a retail lot along Jefferson Avenue or Warwick Boulevard. Military vehicle transport includes a military discount applied at quote time.
Neighborhoods and access
- Hilton Village. A planned First World War era neighborhood with deliberately narrow streets, small setbacks and mature trees. Attractive, and difficult for a full-size carrier. Expect a meet on Warwick Boulevard rather than at the door.
- City Center at Oyster Point. Modern mixed-use with wide roads and surface parking. Some of the easiest loading in the city.
- Denbigh. Suburban development at the north end with driveways and good street widths. Straightforward, and closer to the I-64 access that carriers want.
- Southeast Community and downtown. Older grid near the shipyard with tighter blocks and heavy weekday shift traffic. Timing around shift changes matters more than the streets themselves.
- Port Warwick and Kiln Creek. Newer developments with modern road geometry. Easy access, though some have posted commercial vehicle restrictions that push the meet to the entrance.
How car shipping to or from Newport News works
You request a quote with both ZIP codes, the vehicle and a rough date, and a specialist calls you back with an all-inclusive price. Once you accept, we dispatch into our vetted carrier network. A reservation fee is collected only after a driver has been assigned, and the balance is paid to the driver at delivery. At pickup and again at delivery you and the driver walk the vehicle and sign a bill of lading recording its condition.
Open or enclosed on the Peninsula
Open carrier transport is the standard choice. Enclosed auto transport works well here provided you allow lead time: an enclosed trailer is taller, and the tunnel height restrictions between the Peninsula and the Southside limit which crossings a driver can use. Booking early matters more for enclosed than for open on this side of the water.
The Newport News Marine Terminal is one of the Port of Virginia’s facilities, and we can collect from or deliver to addresses nearby. We do not arrange ocean freight or export documentation; Neptune handles road transport within the 48 contiguous states.
