Norfolk Auto Transport & Car Shipping
Door-to-door car shipping in Norfolk, scheduled around base access, the harbor tunnels and the port traffic that shapes every pickup here.
Neptune Auto Transport arranges auto transport and car shipping to and from Norfolk on open and enclosed carriers, door to door. We move cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles between Norfolk and the other 47 contiguous states, with the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance verified before your vehicle is loaded and one all-inclusive price agreed up front. Norfolk is the operational center of Hampton Roads, and the two things that define car shipping here are the Navy and the water.
What makes Norfolk different
Norfolk holds Naval Station Norfolk, the naval shipyard piers across the river, and Norfolk International Terminals, one of the Port of Virginia’s marine terminals. That concentration produces a constant flow of people arriving and leaving on orders rather than on a seasonal moving calendar, which is why vehicle shipping here stays fairly level through the year instead of spiking each summer.
The water is the other half of the story. Norfolk sits on the Southside, and reaching the Peninsula means the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or, from further west, the Monitor-Merrimac. Both are chokepoints, both carry height restrictions that matter to tall enclosed trailers, and both can add an hour to a driver’s day without warning. Experienced carriers schedule Norfolk pickups early to stay ahead of the crossings.
Base access and PCS moves
Carriers do not hold base credentials, so a car carrier cannot drive onto Naval Station Norfolk to collect a vehicle. That is normal and it is not a limitation on the service. The standard arrangement is a meet at a public location just outside the gate, commonly a large retail lot off Hampton Boulevard or Little Creek Road, agreed with the driver in advance.
For sailors deploying, we can schedule a pickup after you have already left, releasing the vehicle to an authorized adult you nominate. The same applies in reverse on delivery. Military vehicle transport includes a military discount applied to your all-inclusive price when you mention your service at quote time, and our PCS car shipping guide covers the paperwork side.
Neighborhoods and carrier access
- Ghent and West Ghent. Early twentieth-century blocks with narrow streets, mature trees with low branches, and parking on both sides. A 75-foot carrier does not fit. Pickups are arranged on a wider nearby street or a lot along Colley Avenue or Hampton Boulevard.
- Downtown and Freemason. Cobblestone on parts of Freemason Street, one-way patterns and structured parking. Loading happens on an adjacent commercial block rather than at the building.
- Ocean View and East Beach. Residential grid near the bay with reasonable street widths. Generally straightforward, though the streets closest to the water get tight.
- Larchmont and Lafayette. Suburban-style streets around Old Dominion University with driveways. Easy access, and busy in August and May with student moves.
- Near the terminals. The industrial roads around Norfolk International Terminals are built for heavy trucks, so access is excellent, but drayage traffic is heavy on weekdays and drivers plan around shift changes.
How car shipping to or from Norfolk works
You request a quote with both ZIP codes, the vehicle and a rough date. A specialist calls you back with an all-inclusive price rather than an instant machine estimate. Once you accept, we dispatch into our vetted carrier network, and a reservation fee is collected only after a driver has actually been assigned. The balance is paid to the driver at delivery. At pickup you and the driver walk the vehicle and sign a bill of lading recording its condition, and you repeat that walkaround at delivery.
Open, enclosed and the salt-air question
Open carrier transport is what most Norfolk customers book and is the sensible default. Enclosed auto transport is worth the premium for collector and high-value vehicles, with one local caveat: enclosed trailers are taller, and the tunnel height restrictions on the harbor crossings narrow the routing options. Give an enclosed booking extra lead time here.
We do not arrange ocean freight. Norfolk is a port city and people reasonably ask, but Neptune handles road transport within the 48 contiguous states only. We can deliver to or collect from an address near the terminals; we cannot book the vessel or handle export documentation.
