Texas to Virginia Car Shipping
Car transport from Texas to Virginia, door to door, from Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin to Northern Virginia, Norfolk, Fredericksburg and Richmond. Our records put the median trip at 3 days.
Texas to Virginia car shipping, in Neptune Auto Transport’s records, does not end in one place. Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads each took about a quarter of the cars, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania one in five, and Richmond, Fort Lee and Southwest Virginia the rest. Houston supplied four in ten pickups. The median trip took 3 days once the car was loaded. Lately most cars went for about $900 to $1,200 on an open carrier, door to door. Moving from Texas to Virginia? Here is the cost, the timing and the DMV visit.
Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, Fredericksburg, Richmond: a four-way split
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Northern Virginia | 27% |
| Hampton Roads | 27% |
| Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania | 20% |
| Richmond, Petersburg and Southwest Virginia | 26% |
No single part of Virginia took most of the cars. Northern Virginia took 27%: Herndon, Fairfax and Leesburg twice each, plus Reston and Arlington. Hampton Roads took another 27%: Norfolk three times, Newport News twice, and Virginia Beach, Hampton and Chesapeake once each.
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania took one car in five, five of them to Fredericksburg addresses. The last quarter split between the Richmond side, with Glen Allen, Midlothian, Lanexa and Fort Lee, and the southwest, with Roanoke, Blacksburg, Bluefield and Broadway in the Shenandoah Valley. Our Virginia car shipping page covers every other part of the state.
What Texas to Virginia costs: recent prices from Dallas and Central Texas
Each row below comes from at least three separate recent shipments, dispatched from October 2025 to October 2026, for an operable vehicle on an open carrier, door to door.
| Route and vehicle | Recent price range |
|---|---|
| Austin, San Antonio, College Station and Killeen to Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg and Fort Lee, car | $900 to $1,400 |
| Dallas-Fort Worth to Virginia, car | $900 to $1,050 |
| Austin and San Antonio to Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg and Rustburg, SUV | $1,000 to $1,150 |
| Dallas-Fort Worth to Virginia, SUV | about $1,000 |
| Dallas-Fort Worth and Northeast Texas to Virginia, pickup truck | $900 to $1,250 |
| San Antonio to Fredericksburg, pickup truck | $1,000 to $1,300 |
Across every route in those months, cars ran from $850 to $1,400, and most went for about $900 to $1,200. SUVs ran from $950 to $1,150, most of them close to $1,000. Pickup trucks are best judged by their own row, because the starting city moved their price more than it moved a car’s. If you want to ship a car from TX to VA, these are the figures to hold a quote against.
These are recent rates, not a fixed price. Your quote depends on both addresses, the vehicle, your dates and which carriers are heading east. Every quote we send is free and all-inclusive, and an agent calls you back with it.
Katy, Spring and Houston proper: the Texas end
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Greater Houston | 40% |
| Dallas-Fort Worth | 30% |
| Austin area | 17% |
| Rest of Texas | 13% |
Greater Houston supplied 40% of pickups: Houston itself seven times, plus Katy, Spring, Splendora, La Porte and Richmond. Dallas-Fort Worth supplied 30%, from Dallas three times to Grand Prairie, Fort Worth, Lewisville, Allen and Flower Mound. The Austin area added about one car in six, from Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown and Burnet. The rest came from El Paso, Temple, San Antonio and Hebbronville.
Two to four days: Northern Virginia arrives sooner than Hampton Roads
From loading to delivery the median trip took 3 days, and 26 of 30 cars arrived within 4. The Virginia end set the pace more than the Texas end did. Deliveries in Northern Virginia took about 2 to 3 days at the median, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania about 3 to 4, and Hampton Roads about 4. Pickups from Houston and from Dallas-Fort Worth both took 3 days at the median.
Google puts Houston to Richmond at about 1,323 miles, roughly 19 hours of driving on I-10 and I-85, and Houston to Norfolk at about 1,357 miles. Dallas to Fairfax is about 1,311 miles on I-40 and I-81. The pickup date is set separately and depends on where the car is, which carriers are loading toward Virginia and how flexible your dates are. If a date cannot move, ask about expedited auto transport.
Moving on orders to Fort Lee, Norfolk or Fredericksburg
Military towns appear on this route as places our customers shipped to. Fort Lee and the Naval Station Norfolk ZIP code are among our delivery addresses, and Hampton Roads took about a quarter of the cars. We arrange military vehicle transport door to door, with a military discount, and an adult you authorize can hand over or receive the car if you are already on duty.
Virginia’s DMV military FAQ covers registration for service members. Active-duty members whose legal home is another state are generally exempt from local personal property tax on their vehicles under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. The city or county administers it and may ask for your Leave and Earnings Statement, so check with the local commissioner of revenue when you arrive.
Title in 30 days, inspect every year: a Texas car in Virginia
The Virginia DMV asks new residents to title the car within 30 days of moving, then register it, with Virginia insurance in place. Bring the Texas title, or your lender’s details if the car is financed. Virginia also requires a safety inspection every year, and the sticker must be valid before you drive on Virginia roads.
An emissions inspection applies only where the car is kept: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. So a car garaged in Stafford needs one, while the city of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Richmond and Hampton Roads do not. A current out-of-state emissions certificate from the last 12 months can count for the first registration.
Two-thirds sedans and coupes, from a Camry to a Porsche Boxster
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 67% |
| SUVs, vans and a pickup | 33% |
Cars made up two-thirds of the loads: Camrys, Civics and Accords, a Toyota Crown, a Lexus LS 460, an Alfa Romeo Giulia and a Porsche 718 Boxster. The rest were SUVs such as a Chevrolet Tahoe, an Audi Q5, a Subaru Ascent and a Mercedes GLS, two minivans and a 1988 Ford F-150. The median model year was 2017.
Most went on an open carrier, which is what the price table describes. For a sports car like the Boxster or anything you would rather keep out of the weather, ask us to price an enclosed trailer too.
Heading back? Virginia to Texas runs the other way
Our Virginia to Texas guide covers the opposite direction, which spreads across more Texas cities, including San Antonio and El Paso, with a section on moves to Fort Bliss, Joint Base San Antonio and Fort Hood. Its median was also 3 days. For other routes out of Texas, see our Texas auto transport page.
How we measured it
The shares, medians and vehicle mix come from Neptune Auto Transport’s own Texas to Virginia shipments picked up from January 2023 to July 2026. Areas are built from the first three digits of each ZIP code, transit runs from loading to delivery, and percentages are rounded so each table adds to 100. The price table is separate: it reflects recent comparable shipments on these routes dispatched from October 2025 to October 2026, not our order records, and it is not a quote. No customer or address is named, and nothing here promises a price or a date.
