Car Shipping from Texas to New Jersey
Door-to-door auto transport from Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and the rest of Texas to every part of New Jersey, from Jersey City and Newark to Trenton and South Jersey. Our records show a 3-day median trip once the car was loaded.
Car shipping from Texas to New Jersey, in Neptune Auto Transport’s records, starts mostly in Dallas-Fort Worth and ends well south of Newark. About half the cars we moved on this route were picked up in the Dallas area, and only about a quarter were delivered in North Jersey. The rest went to Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties, the Trenton and Princeton area and South Jersey. Once loaded, the median car was delivered in 3 days. If you are moving from Texas to New Jersey, this guide covers where we pick up and deliver, how long it takes, what drives the cost and what the New Jersey MVC asks of you.
Where our Texas to New Jersey shipments start
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Dallas-Fort Worth | 49% |
| Greater Houston | 24% |
| Austin area | 15% |
| Other (San Antonio area, El Paso) | 12% |
Dallas-Fort Worth supplied about half the cars, a larger Dallas share than on any of the 17 routes out of Texas with the most orders in our records. They came from Dallas itself and from suburbs on every side of it: Little Elm, Lewisville, Celina and Flower Mound to the north, Irving and Farmers Branch near the airport, Arlington and Grand Prairie to the west, and Burleson south of Fort Worth. Dallas-area pickups took 3 days at the median.
Greater Houston supplied about a quarter, from Houston itself and from Humble, League City and Arcola. Only one of those 17 Texas routes drew a smaller share from Houston. Houston pickups also took 3 days at the median, although Houston sits about 70 miles farther from Newark than Dallas does.
The Austin area supplied about one in seven cars, from Austin, Leander and Manor, the second-largest Austin share among those routes. With about 1,740 miles to cover, Austin-area cars took a day longer, 4 days at the median. San Antonio and nearby China Grove sent a few cars, and El Paso sent one: a 1996 Chevrolet Corvette bound for Salem County.
Where in New Jersey Texas cars are delivered
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties | 43% |
| North Jersey (Hudson, Essex, Bergen) | 24% |
| South Jersey (Burlington, Gloucester, Salem) | 18% |
| Trenton and Princeton area | 15% |
This is where the route stands apart. Only about a quarter of the cars went to North Jersey: Jersey City, Newark, Bayonne, Irvington, Hackensack, Carlstadt and Mahwah. That is the smallest North Jersey share among our six main routes into New Jersey; on the other five it ran from about half of all deliveries to nearly all of them.
About four in ten went to Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties, the suburbs strung along the Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway and Route 1: Woodbridge, Avenel, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, North Brunswick, Highland Park and Jamesburg in Middlesex, Somerset and Raritan in Somerset County, and Holmdel in Monmouth.
The Trenton and Princeton area took about one in seven, in Trenton, Lawrence Township and Plainsboro, and South Jersey almost one in five, from Mount Holly and Beverly in Burlington County to Williamstown, Salem and Pennsville. Each of those two shares is larger than on any of our other main routes into New Jersey. Going farther south did not slow anything down: deliveries outside North Jersey took the same 3-day median.
How long does it take to ship a car from Texas to New Jersey?
The median was 3 days from loading to delivery, and 91 percent of cars arrived in 2 to 4 days. Two in three took 3 days or less. A couple of trips ran a week or more, which is why we talk in ranges rather than dates.
Dallas to Newark is about 1,550 miles, Houston to Newark about 1,620 and Austin to Newark about 1,740. From Dallas the interstates run northeast through Arkansas and Tennessee to I-81 in Virginia, then across Pennsylvania on I-78 into New Jersey. From Houston the roads first head east toward Alabama before turning north to the same corridor.
When the truck reaches your Texas address depends on the exact pickup and delivery locations, the carriers available on the route, your vehicle, open or enclosed transport and the dates you can offer. We agree a pickup window with you once a carrier is assigned, and expedited auto transport helps when a date cannot move. These medians come from completed trips; they are not a delivery date we can promise.
Cost to ship a car from Texas to New Jersey: what moves the price
We don’t publish a price band for this route yet, because too few cars and SUVs moved on it in the last two years to set one fairly. Our car shipping cost calculator shows what cars and SUVs cost on our shipments from Southern to Northeastern states, and a quote gives you one all-inclusive figure for your exact addresses, with no deposit taken before a driver is booked. What our records do show is direction: in every year from 2022 to 2026, the median Texas to New Jersey auto transport shipment cost less than the median trip from New Jersey to Texas. Five things move the price on this route:
- Where in Texas the car starts. Houston adds about 70 miles to the Dallas trip and Austin about 190, and a pickup far from the interstates adds miles to the carrier’s day.
- Where in New Jersey it ends. A driveway near a Turnpike or Parkway exit is quicker to serve than a Hudson County block with nowhere to stop.
- The vehicle. An SUV, about a third of our cars on this route, takes more deck space than a sedan, and a car that does not run has to be winched on and off.
- Open or enclosed. Each enclosed trailer carries fewer cars, so enclosed transport is priced well above open.
- Your dates. A flexible pickup window lets us choose among more carriers; a fixed date or expedited service costs more.
Our guide to how much it costs to ship a car explains each factor in more depth.
Austin to Newark, Lewisville to Trenton and other trips we have run
Each of these city pairs appears once or twice in our records, so we name them rather than average them.
- Dallas-Fort Worth to Central Jersey and Jersey City. Little Elm to Avenel, Grand Prairie to Perth Amboy, Irving to Sayreville, Arlington to Jamesburg, Dallas to Highland Park and Somerset, and Farmers Branch to Jersey City.
- Lewisville to Trenton and Dallas to South Jersey. Lewisville to Trenton and to Pennsville, Flower Mound to Lawrence Township, Dallas to Beverly, Burleson to Mount Holly and Celina to Williamstown.
- Houston to Trenton, Plainsboro and Monmouth County. Humble to Trenton, and Houston to Plainsboro, Holmdel and Mount Holly.
- Houston to North Jersey. Houston to Irvington, Arcola to Carlstadt and League City to Mahwah.
- Austin to Newark and Jersey City. Austin to Newark, Jersey City and Plainsboro, Leander to Woodbridge and Manor to Raritan.
- San Antonio and El Paso. San Antonio to Bayonne and Hackensack, China Grove to North Brunswick, and El Paso to Salem.

Delivery day in New Jersey: Turnpike suburbs, North Jersey streets and South Jersey roads
Most of our Texas cars ended up in suburbs, and that shapes delivery day more than the drive does. A loaded carrier is long, tall and slow to turn, so the right meeting spot matters:
- Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset developments. Townhouse rows and cul-de-sacs off Route 1, Route 18 and the Parkway often cannot take a full-size carrier, and some communities restrict trucks. The driver calls ahead, and a shopping-center lot or office park near your exit is a common place to meet.
- Jersey City, Newark and the older North Jersey towns. Row houses, permit-only parking and tight corners in Hudson and Essex counties rarely leave room for a carrier to stop and unload. Plan on a short walk to a wider through-road or a store lot.
- South Jersey and the Trenton area. Farm roads and wooded lots around Mount Holly, Williamstown and Salem County usually have space, but soft shoulders, gravel drives and low branches can still stop a big truck. Mention them when you book.
- Someone to sign. Delivery means a walk-around check against the Bill of Lading and a signature. If you fly in after the car arrives, name a friend or neighbor to meet the driver.
New Jersey to Texas car shipping: the trip back
We run the reverse direction too, and our New Jersey to Texas car shipping guide covers it in full. The two directions only loosely mirror each other. Going back, Greater Houston took about a third of the deliveries, against the quarter of pickups it supplied here, while Dallas-Fort Worth’s share was similar both ways. At the New Jersey end, North Jersey supplied more than four in ten of the cars heading to Texas, far more than the quarter it received from Texas.
Transit was close. The trip back took 4 days at the median and this direction 3, but the average trips were less than a quarter of a day apart, so plan on 3 to 4 days either way. Price is the one clear difference, covered in the cost section above.
Cars and SUVs from Texas
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 64% |
| SUVs and crossovers | 36% |
Every vehicle on this route in our records was a car or an SUV, with no pickup trucks, vans or motorcycles. SUVs and crossovers made up about a third, fewer than on the trip back to Texas, where they were more than four in ten. About one in five was model year 2010 or older, half were built between 2012 and 2017, and the newest were 2025 models. If you are shipping an SUV from Texas to New Jersey, it rides on the same carriers as a sedan; tell us about roof boxes, lift kits or a low front lip when you book. We also quote pickup trucks and cars that do not run, even though none appear in our records for this route.
Open or enclosed from Texas to New Jersey
An open carrier suits most cars on this route and costs the least. Car transport from Texas to New Jersey on an open deck means about 1,500 miles of interstate weather and road grit, which modern paint handles well. An enclosed trailer earns its higher price for a classic, a low car that needs a liftgate, fresh paint or a car you plan to show, and in winter it keeps road salt off the last stretch into New Jersey. Enclosed capacity is scarcer, so request it well ahead of your pickup date. Our open vs enclosed comparison sets out the trade-offs.
After the move: registering a Texas car with the New Jersey MVC
New Jersey gives new residents 60 days to transfer an out-of-state title and registration, according to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The first visit is in person at an MVC agency, by appointment. Bring proof of identity, usually your driver license, the original Texas title, your insurance details and two completed forms: the Universal Title Application (OS/SS-UTA) and the Vehicle Registration Application (BA-49). You leave with New Jersey plates, a registration and a temporary inspection card, and the car then needs a New Jersey inspection.
If a bank or leasing company holds the title, the MVC also asks for its Application for Release of Title from Lienholder (OS/SS-54) and mails the new title to the lender. On the Texas side, TxDMV tells lenders that a printed title is needed when an owner moves out of state, so ask your lender for it before your MVC appointment. Our New Jersey auto transport page covers shipping anywhere else in the state.
Before the carrier collects the car in Texas:
- Keep the title and registration with you. You need them at the MVC, so pack them in your own bag, not the glovebox.
- Take the toll tag off the windshield. A TxTag, EZ TAG or NTTA TollTag left on the glass can be read on the way out of Texas. New Jersey tolls run on E-ZPass, which you can set up once the car is home.
- Leave about a quarter tank. The car only needs fuel to drive on and off the truck.
- Photograph every side in daylight and compare the photos with the condition notes on the Bill of Lading at pickup and again in New Jersey.
- Ship it nearly empty. Most carriers allow only a few light items below the window line (what carriers accept).
How we measured it
All figures come from Neptune Auto Transport’s Texas to New Jersey orders placed from November 2022 to August 2026, and its New Jersey to Texas orders for the comparison, with voided and duplicate orders left out. Areas are grouped by the first three digits of each ZIP code, except a few Middlesex County ZIP codes that share a prefix with Newark, which are counted with Middlesex. Two crossovers recorded as cars are counted as SUVs. Transit runs from loading to delivery, and every order on this route had both dates. Comparisons with other routes use the routes with the most orders in our records, and shares are rounded to total 100. The page shows no customer or address, and none of these figures promises a price or a date.
