In Neptune Auto Transport's records, New Jersey to Texas has no real season, no pickup trucks at all and very little variety in where the cars end up: close to four in five went to Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston. What does vary is where in New Jersey they start, and that is what shapes the pickup.

The New Jersey to Texas route at a glance

Newark to Dallas is about 1,550 miles and Newark to Houston about 1,620; from Trenton, knock off about 50. Most carriers leave New Jersey on I-78 into Pennsylvania and run south down I-81 through the Shenandoah Valley into Tennessee. From there, Dallas loads usually continue on I-40 and I-30 through Memphis and Little Rock, and Houston loads turn south through Alabama and Mississippi. Either way it is three to four long driving days.

Central Jersey (Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Ocean)41%

North and Central Jersey supplied almost equal shares, which sets this lane apart from our Florida routes, where Central Jersey is closer to a quarter. Central Jersey pickups, around South Amboy, Edison, Sayreville, Red Bank, Jackson and Windsor, made up 41 percent, and Central Jersey to Dallas-Fort Worth was the single most common pairing on the lane. North Jersey pickups came from Bayonne, Bloomfield, Newark, Jersey City and the towns around them.

That split matters on pickup day. A Central Jersey address a few minutes from the Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, Route 1 or I-287 is usually quick for a full-size carrier. In the older, denser towns of Hudson and Essex counties, expect the driver to ask to meet on a wider street or in a commercial lot, and none of these pickups needs a truck to cross the Hudson. South Jersey, across the Delaware from Philadelphia, adds another tenth. Coming the other way, our Texas to New Jersey auto transport records show the opposite lean: only about a quarter of those cars were delivered in North Jersey, and most went to Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties, the Trenton area and South Jersey.

Dallas-Fort Worth43%

Dallas-Fort Worth led with 43 percent, spread from Dallas to McKinney, Farmers Branch and Duncanville. Greater Houston took 35 percent, including Spring, Katy and the northern suburbs as well as Houston itself. Austin and San Antonio together took about one car in seven.

Many of the newer subdivisions around both metros have homeowners' association rules or narrow cul-de-sacs that keep a full-size carrier out. The driver will call ahead and meet you at the subdivision entrance or a nearby lot if the street will not take the truck.

How long does it take to ship a car from New Jersey to Texas?

Based on our historical shipment data for this lane, the median loaded transit time was 4 days. More than four in five shipments arrived within 3 to 5 days of pickup, and close to half took 3 days or less. Dallas-Fort Worth deliveries were the quickest, with a 3-day median; Houston's median fell between 3 and 4 days; Austin, El Paso and the smaller Texas cities took longer and pulled the lane figure up. North and Central Jersey pickups ran to the same 4-day median.

The pickup window comes first: usually 2 to 5 business days from booking on standard service, or 24 to 72 hours with expedited auto transport. These figures describe past shipments and are not a guaranteed delivery time; our guide to how long car shipping takes explains the difference between the two clocks.

Almost every vehicle was a car or an SUV

Not one pickup truck or motorcycle appears in our records for this lane. It is household cars and SUVs, with SUVs at 43 percent, one of the highest SUV shares we see. An open carrier suits that well. For a winter pickup, bear in mind the car leaves New Jersey through road salt and may cross snow on I-81 in the Virginia mountains, so enclosed transport is worth pricing for anything valuable.

What it costs to ship a car from New Jersey to Texas

We do not publish a price band for this lane, because too few cars and SUVs moved on it in the last 24 months to band fairly. One thing our records do show: the typical price barely moved between 2022 and 2026, so this is a lane where a quote is unlikely to be distorted by a seasonal spike. What changes the price:

  • Which Texas metro. Houston is a little further than Dallas, and Austin, San Antonio and El Paso further still.
  • How easy the pickup is. A suburban Central Jersey driveway is simpler than a Hudson County row house.
  • The vehicle. A full-size SUV takes more deck space than a sedan; an inoperable vehicle needs a winch.
  • Open or enclosed. Enclosed costs substantially more, because the trailer holds fewer vehicles and the equipment is scarcer.

Timing a New Jersey to Texas move

This lane has no season to plan around. In our records, pickups split 32 percent from January to April, 35 percent from May to August and 33 percent from September to December. One to two weeks' notice is comfortable. The only calendar factor is winter weather on the Appalachian stretch of I-81, which can add a day between December and February.

How a New Jersey to Texas shipment works

  1. Quote. Share your New Jersey pickup address, your Texas delivery address, the vehicle and your dates. You get one all-inclusive price, and no deposit is taken before a driver is booked.
  2. Book. We assign a vetted carrier already heading south and west, and agree a pickup window with you.
  3. Pickup. The driver inspects the car with you, notes its condition on the Bill of Lading and loads it. Take out your E-ZPass first, so it is not read at tolls along the way.
  4. Delivery. In Texas you check the car against the Bill of Lading and sign for it. After a move, remember that Texas gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle.

How these figures were calculated

We drew these figures from aggregated Neptune Auto Transport records of New Jersey to Texas orders placed between May 2022 and August 2026, excluding voided orders. Pickup and delivery areas are grouped by ZIP code prefix. Transit is measured from the day a carrier loaded the car to the day it was delivered, using only shipments with both dates on record; the median was the same with or without the incomplete records. Percentages are rounded, and each table adds up to 100. No individual shipment, customer or address is shown, and none of these figures guarantees a future price or delivery date.
