Nineteen of the 27 cars we picked up in North Jersey went to the Los Angeles area or Orange County, while eight of the 11 from Central Jersey went to the Bay Area, Fremont above all. How much does it cost to ship a car from New Jersey to California?

The table shows what comparable shipments from New Jersey to California recently cost, all in, for a running vehicle on an open carrier, door to door. Each row rests on three or more separate shipments, dispatched between late September and late October 2026.

Across the five car listings the range was $1,500 to $1,700, and three of the five landed at $1,700: Neptune City to Villa Park, Bordentown to Los Angeles and Point Pleasant Beach to Hermosa Beach. Newark to Woodland Hills sat at the low end, and Bordentown to Sunnyvale, in the Bay Area, at $1,550. The SUVs split by destination: the three to Los Angeles, Huntington Beach and Santa Clara each cost $1,600, while Windsor to San Diego, Allenhurst to Santa Barbara and Sewell to Escondido ran $1,900 to $2,300. Pickup trucks ran $1,700 to $2,300 in three listings.

North Jersey to Los Angeles, Central Jersey to the Bay Area

In our records the starting point in New Jersey shaped where the car ended up. Of the 27 cars picked up in North Jersey, from Newark, West Orange and Paramus to Jersey City, Glen Rock and Englewood, 19 went to the Los Angeles area or Orange County: Los Angeles itself, Long Beach, Glendale, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach and Irvine. Of the 11 from Central Jersey, eight went to the Bay Area, and Fremont took five of them, every one from Plainsboro, Piscataway or Lawrence Township. The Jersey Shore, from Freehold, Red Bank and Long Branch, supplied about a fifth of all pickups.

Bay Area deliveries went to Fremont, San Jose, San Francisco, San Mateo, Oakland, Cupertino and Santa Clara. Beyond those three areas, cars went to San Diego, Oceanside and Carlsbad, to Antelope, Lincoln and Elk Grove around Sacramento, and to Palm Springs and Clovis.

In our records the trip took 7 days at the median once the car was loaded, across 53 timed trips, and 46 of them took 4 to 8 days. The median was the same for trips picked up from 2022 to 2024 and for those since 2025, and for cars and SUVs alike. It is a reference point, not a promise.

Driving it yourself is a long haul: Google puts Newark to Los Angeles at 2,781 miles, about 41 hours on I-80, and Edison to Fremont at 2,924 miles, about 43 hours. The clock on those 7 days starts at loading. On standard service a carrier is usually assigned 2 to 5 business days after booking; if your dates are fixed, expedited auto transport narrows that gap.

Registering a New Jersey car in California: 20 days, smog and a VIN check

New Jersey to California auto transport ends at the DMV. California gives new residents 20 days to register a car, counted from the day you become a resident or take a job there. Bring the New Jersey title, or the registration if a lender holds the title, an Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) and a verification of the vehicle’s VIN (REG 31), which a DMV employee, a peace officer or a licensed vehicle verifier completes.

Most cars also need a California smog certificate: gasoline cars from 1976 on and diesels from 1998 on. The exemption for newer cars that California residents get does not apply to a car arriving from another state, so even a recent model is tested; a fully electric car needs no Smog Check. Your policy must meet California’s liability minimums of $30,000, $60,000 and $15,000, raised in 2025, and the registration bill includes a vehicle license fee based on the car’s value, which the DMV fee calculator estimates. Bought the car in New Jersey recently? The 7,500-mile rule and use tax

California will not register a car built only to federal emission standards, sometimes called a 49-state car, if it has fewer than 7,500 miles on the odometer, unless one of the DMV’s exemptions applies. The emission label under the hood says which standard the car was built to. Separately, a car bought outside California and brought in within 12 months is presumed to have been bought for use there, so it can owe California use tax unless you show otherwise. Neither rule touches the shipping, but both decide whether a new car can get California plates when it arrives.

Before pickup in New Jersey: E-ZPass, plates and tight streets

• Your toll tag. E-ZPass New Jersey requires a tag to be removed from a vehicle being towed, or the account may be billed, so peel it off or put it in its read-prevention bag before the truck leaves.
• Your plates. Once the car is registered in California, the New Jersey plates go back to the Motor Vehicle Commission: hand them in at any agency, use the drop box outside, or mail them with a stamped return envelope, and keep the surrender receipt in case a charge is later tied to them.
• Tight blocks. Where parked cars line both sides of a street, as they often do in Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken and Paterson, a full-size carrier may not fit; the driver sets a nearby meeting spot, and that costs nothing extra.
• On the day. Run the tank down to about a quarter, remove valuables and anything loose (what carriers accept), photograph each side, and walk around the car with the driver using the bill of lading, at pickup and again in California.

Ferraris, Mach-Es and Civics: open or enclosed for 2,800 miles

Most of the vehicles were everyday cars and SUVs, a 2016 model at the median, but the list also holds a 2021 Ferrari SF90 that went from Edison to Alamo, a 2003 Porsche 911 to Beverly Hills and a 1994 Corvette to Lincoln, outside Sacramento. Electric cars made the trip too, among them a Ford Mustang Mach-E to Piedmont and a BMW iX to San Jose.
