Maryland to California Car Shipping
Door-to-door auto transport from Baltimore, Columbia, Annapolis and the Maryland suburbs of Washington to Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego and the rest of California. In our records the median trip took 5 to 6 days once the car was loaded.
Maryland to California car shipping, in Neptune Auto Transport’s records, ends in one place more than any other. About four in ten cars went to Greater Los Angeles, a higher share than on any other busy California-bound lane we track. They started from two different parts of Maryland. Baltimore and its suburbs, from Columbia and Glen Burnie to Edgewood and Owings Mills, supplied about half the pickups. The Maryland suburbs of Washington supplied almost four in ten. If you are moving from Maryland to California, the median trip took 5 to 6 days once the car was loaded. Los Angeles deliveries ran quicker than that.
Where Maryland cars went in California
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Greater Los Angeles | 42% |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 14% |
| San Diego County | 12% |
| Central Valley | 9% |
| Orange County | 7% |
| Central Coast | 7% |
| Other areas | 9% |
Greater Los Angeles took 42 percent of deliveries: Los Angeles itself, Northridge, Sherman Oaks and North Hills in the San Fernando Valley, Marina del Rey and Lynwood, plus Ontario and Chino just over the San Bernardino County line. The Bay Area took about one car in seven (San Jose, Vallejo, Benicia, Stanford, Sonoma) and San Diego County about one in eight (San Diego and Oceanside). The rest went to the Central Valley (Modesto, Lemoore), Orange County (Irvine, Fullerton, Anaheim), the Central Coast (Monterey, Pacific Grove, Oxnard) and the Sacramento area.
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Baltimore suburbs | 32% |
| Montgomery County | 19% |
| Prince George’s County | 19% |
| Baltimore (city and inner suburbs) | 12% |
| Other areas | 18% |
The Baltimore suburbs (Howard, Harford, Anne Arundel and Carroll counties: Columbia, Arnold, Edgewood, Crofton, Glen Burnie, Reisterstown) supplied about a third of pickups, and Baltimore with its inner suburbs about one in eight. On the Washington side, Montgomery County (Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bethesda, Germantown) and Prince George’s County (Riverdale, Clinton, Bowie, Laurel) each supplied about one in five. Annapolis, Frederick, Salisbury on the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland made up the rest. Moving to Texas instead? Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland supplied almost half the cars on our Maryland to Texas lane, and Montgomery County only one.
How long does it take to ship a car from Maryland to California?
The median in our records was 5 to 6 days from loading to delivery, and about eight in ten cars arrived within 3 to 7 days. The California end mattered more than the Maryland one: deliveries to Greater Los Angeles ran a median of about 4 days, while the Bay Area and San Diego took about a week. Pickups around Baltimore ran about 2 days quicker at the median than those in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, largely because a bigger share of them went to Los Angeles.
By road it is about 2,650 miles from Baltimore to Los Angeles, much of it on Interstate 40. On standard service the pickup usually falls 2 to 5 business days after you book; if your moving date is fixed, ask about expedited auto transport. These are completed shipments from our records, not a delivery promise.

- Baltimore to Los Angeles. The most common pairing: cars from Baltimore, Pikesville, Reisterstown, Crofton and Gambrills to Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley ran a median of 4 days once loaded.

- Maryland to the Central Valley. Riverdale to Modesto came up twice, and a Salisbury car went to Lemoore.

Moving from Maryland to California: timing and registration
Pickups on this lane ran through the whole year in our records, with no busy season to plan around. If your moving date is fixed, book early so there are more carriers to choose from.
After the car arrives, California gives new residents 20 days to register it, counted from the day you become a resident or start a job there. Most cars from another state need a California smog certification first. If a document is missing, send the application and fees on time anyway: the DMV then issues a temporary operating permit while you finish. Your Maryland title or registration is the starting point. The DMV’s New California Resident Portal lists every step.
Cars and SUVs on this lane
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 56% |
| SUVs and crossovers | 37% |
| Pickup trucks | 5% |
| Vans | 2% |
SUVs were about 37 percent of this lane, more than on most of our 50 busiest lanes, and cars 56 percent. The typical vehicle was a 2015 model, and about one in four was a 2010 model or older. If you are shipping an SUV from Maryland to California, it goes on the trailer like any car; mention a lift kit, oversized tires or a roof rack, because those change where it can ride.
Open or enclosed across the country
Open carriers are the standard and least expensive way to cross the country. For a classic, a sports car or a new car you want delivered clean after 2,600 miles of weather, enclosed car transport from Maryland to California is the better fit. Enclosed trailers carry fewer vehicles, so they need a few more days of notice.
Before pickup in Maryland
- Book early if your date is fixed. Earlier booking gives you more carriers to choose from, and expedited auto transport covers a firm date.
- Take off your E-ZPass or seal it in its foil bag, so tolls on the way west are not charged to you.
- Keep the load light. A few personal items can ride in the trunk, below the window line; our guide to packing items inside your car explains the limits.
- Plan the handoff if you live on a narrow Baltimore rowhouse block or a permit-parking street; a nearby lot keeps it quick.
- Photograph the car on pickup day and keep your copy of the Bill of Lading until delivery.
How we measured it
The shares and times on this page come from Neptune Auto Transport’s records of Maryland to California orders placed from June 2022 to August 2026, leaving out voided orders. Areas group ZIP codes by their first three digits, so Ontario and Chino count toward Greater Los Angeles. Transit counts days from loading to delivery. Two records show a one-day crossing, which is not possible, so we quote the median as 5 to 6 days: it is 5.5 with them and 6 without. Lane comparisons use our 50 busiest lanes, and percentages are rounded to 100. No order, customer or address appears here, and nothing on this page promises a price or a delivery date.
