California to Maryland Car Shipping
Car transport from California to Maryland, door to door, from Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area to Silver Spring, Rockville, Bowie and the Baltimore area. Our records put the median trip at 5 to 6 days.
California to Maryland car shipping, in Neptune Auto Transport’s records, is mostly about cars: three in four of the vehicles we moved on this route were cars, one of the highest car shares among our busier lanes. More than half went to Maryland’s suburbs of Washington, DC, and about a third to the Baltimore area. Once loaded, the median trip took 5 to 6 days. If you are moving from California to Maryland, recent prices for a car ran $1,400 to $1,900, depending on where in California it starts.
How much is it to ship a car from LA or the Bay Area to Maryland?
Every row below rests on at least three separate recent shipments, all dispatched from January to October 2026, for a running vehicle on an open carrier, picked up and delivered at the door.
| Route and vehicle | Recent price range |
|---|---|
| Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Long Beach) to Maryland, car | $1,400 to $1,650 |
| Bay Area (San Francisco, San Jose, Hayward, Burlingame) to Maryland, car | $1,400 to $1,900 |
| Southern California and the Central Coast to Maryland, SUV | $1,200 to $2,200 |
| Bay Area and the Central Valley (Tracy, Fresno) to Maryland, SUV | $1,500 to $1,800 |
| California to Maryland, pickup truck | $1,800 to $2,200 |
Across all twelve car listings the range was $1,400 to $1,900, and most fell between $1,400 and $1,700. SUVs spread wider, from $1,200 to $2,200, with a few listings at each end, but most still landed at $1,400 to $1,700. Recent examples include Hayward to Silver Spring, Long Beach to Bowie, San Francisco to Columbia and San Jose to Baltimore.
The Bay Area car prices moved inside the window: late-September listings ran $1,700 to $1,900 and the mid-October ones $1,400. That is why the table reads as recent history, not a quote. Your own figure follows the two addresses, the vehicle, the pickup date you choose and how many carriers are heading east that week.
Where did California cars go in Maryland: the DC suburbs or Baltimore?
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| DC suburbs (Montgomery, Prince George’s and Charles counties) | 54% |
| Baltimore area (Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel) | 32% |
| Frederick, Annapolis and the Eastern Shore | 14% |
The Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC took 54% of the cars. Montgomery County took seven, from Silver Spring and Burtonsville to Rockville, Chevy Chase and Montgomery Village; Prince George’s took six, including Bowie, Greenbelt, Laurel and Hyattsville; and two went to Waldorf in Charles County.
If you are shipping a car from Los Angeles to DC itself, the process is the same: our cars went to the Maryland side of the line, and an address inside the District is quoted the same way. From Southern California to the DC suburbs the median trip took 5 days once loaded.
The Baltimore area took about a third: Baltimore three times, plus Halethorpe, Gwynn Oak, Ellicott City, Columbia, Odenton and Arnold. The rest went to Frederick and Walkersville, Annapolis and Elkton. Our Baltimore car shipping and Columbia pages cover delivery there, and the Maryland auto transport page covers the rest of the state.
Is a California to Maryland quote different for an SUV or a pickup?
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 75% |
| SUVs and a pickup truck | 25% |
Three in four were cars, against about half on all our interstate routes: three Tesla Model 3s, Camrys, Civics, a Prius Prime, a Lexus IS and a Mustang GT350 among them. The SUVs ran from a Honda HR-V to a GMC Yukon XL.
Size shows up in the price. In the recent listings above, most cars and most SUVs both landed at $1,400 to $1,700, while pickups started where cars topped out, at $1,800 to $2,200. Mention a lift, a roof rack or oversized tires when you book, because they change where the vehicle rides on the trailer.
How long is a California to Maryland trip once the car is loaded?
Once loaded, the median trip took 5.5 days, and 25 of 28 cars arrived within a week. Cars from Southern California took about 6 days at the median and cars from the Bay Area, the Central Valley and Vacaville about 5. Deliveries to the DC suburbs and to the Baltimore area both took 5.
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles and Orange County | 29% |
| Bay Area | 21% |
| San Diego County | 18% |
| Inland Empire, Central Valley and Vacaville | 32% |
Pickups came from both ends of the state. Los Angeles and Orange County supplied eight, from North Hollywood and Tarzana to Long Beach and Orange; San Diego County five; the Bay Area six, from Oakland and Hayward to Stanford and San Jose; and the Inland Empire and the Central Valley four each, Fresno and Stockton among them. Southern California as a whole supplied 61%.
Before any of that comes the pickup window: on standard service a carrier is usually assigned within 2 to 5 business days of booking, and expedited auto transport shortens the wait. Going the other way? Our Maryland to California route covers the westbound trip, which took the same 5 to 6 days at the median.
Can you ship a car by train from California to Maryland?
Not by rail. The only passenger train in the US that carries cars is Amtrak’s Auto Train, and it runs a single route, between Lorton, Virginia and Sanford, Florida. Nothing like it crosses the country from California.
That leaves driving or a truck. Google puts Los Angeles to Baltimore at about 2,653 miles, roughly 39 hours at the wheel on I-40, which works out to five or six days on the road with fuel, hotels and meals. A carrier covers the same ground in about the same time while you fly, and the car arrives without the extra miles.
What will Maryland charge to title a car from California?
The Maryland MVA gives new residents 60 days to title and register. Inside that window the excise tax works in your favor if you paid California sales tax: Maryland’s rate is 6.5% and California’s base rate is 7.25%, so a car 6 model years old or newer pays a flat $100 instead of 6.5% of its value. A car 7 model years or older pays $41.60.
Miss the 60 days and the credit for California tax is gone. Since October 1, 2026 the MVA also writes to Maryland residents still on out-of-state tags, and after a 60-day notice a penalty of $7 a day builds up to $420. Before the title appointment, the car needs a Maryland Safety Inspection certificate from a licensed station; the emissions test, VEIP, comes later by mail.
Open or enclosed for 2,650 miles east
Most cars ride an open carrier, the standard choice and the one the prices above describe. For a GT350, a Mercedes SLK convertible or anything that sits low, enclosed auto transport keeps it covered across the desert and the mountains, and costs more. Our classic car transport page covers older cars.
Prepping a California car for a coast-to-coast haul
Keep the California title and registration with you rather than in the glovebox, because the MVA asks for the title. Leave about a quarter tank, take out personal items and anything loose, and walk around the car with the driver at pickup so existing scratches go on the bill of lading.
How we measured it
The shares, medians and vehicle mix come from Neptune Auto Transport’s California to Maryland shipments picked up from August 2022 to August 2026, 28 orders with voided ones left out. Areas are groups of ZIP codes sharing their first three digits, trips are timed from loading to delivery, comparisons are with our other interstate routes, and shares are rounded to total 100. The prices come from a different source: recent comparable shipments on this route dispatched January to October 2026. They are not a quote, and nothing here names a customer.
