San Diego County (San Diego, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Poway) and the Bay Area (Fremont, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Oakland, Dublin) supplied about a quarter of pickups each. Los Angeles County added about one in five, and Orange County and the Central Valley most of the rest. Vehicles we ship from California to Virginia: mostly SUVs and trucks

Vehicle mix, California to Virginia (SUVs outnumbered cars)
Vehicle typeShare of shipments
SUVs and crossovers42%
Cars and sedans39%
Pickup trucks14%
Other vehicles5%

No other busy lane in our records carries a lower share of ordinary cars. SUVs outnumbered sedans, one vehicle in seven was a pickup, and minivans made up most of the rest. If you are shipping an SUV or pickup truck from California to Virginia, give us the exact model and mention any lift, roof rack, bike rack or oversized tires when you ask for a quote. A taller or longer vehicle takes more space on the trailer and can change which carrier fits it. Our guide to shipping an SUV or truck explains why.

How long does it take to ship a car from California to Virginia?

Based on our shipment records, the median was 6 days from loading to delivery, and about eight in ten cars arrived within 4 to 7 days. Northern Virginia deliveries ran to a 6-day median. Hampton Roads deliveries took longer, 7 to 8 days, since Norfolk and Chesapeake sit roughly 200 miles past the Washington suburbs.

By road, Los Angeles to Fairfax is about 2,650 miles, mostly on I-40, and San Francisco to Fairfax about 2,820 on I-80. San Diego to Norfolk is about 2,700. Before any of that, allow 2 to 5 business days for a carrier to reach you on standard service, or ask about expedited auto transport if your dates are tight. These describe shipments already completed, not a promised delivery date.

Popular city pairs from California to Virginia

  • Bay Area to Northern Virginia. The most common pairing: Fremont, Dublin, Oakland, Los Altos and Scotts Valley to Centreville, Herndon, Ashburn, Annandale, Fairfax and Leesburg. It ran to a 5.5-day median once loaded.
  • Los Angeles to Virginia. Los Angeles County cars mostly went to Northern Virginia, to Woodbridge, Falls Church, Alexandria and Herndon, with a few to Hampton Roads and Richmond.
  • San Diego to Virginia. San Diego County split three ways: Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and the Culpeper and Front Royal area.
  • San Diego to Norfolk. A Navy-to-Navy pairing that appears in both directions of our records; more on it below.

Moving to Northern Virginia from California

Most of these cars were headed for the Washington suburbs, and arriving there has its own logistics:

  • Private streets and garden apartments. Many Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William subdivisions, and the apartment complexes of Arlington and Alexandria, cannot take a full-length car carrier. A school, church or shopping-center lot nearby is the usual handoff.
  • Registration comes quickly. Virginia gives new residents 30 days to title and register a car, and Northern Virginia counties add an emissions inspection; the FAQ below has the details.
  • Commuter traffic. Deliveries inside the Beltway go more smoothly outside rush hour, so a midday window is worth asking for.

Some of these moves were Navy moves. Pickups near Naval Base San Diego and in Monterey, home of the Naval Postgraduate School, went to Norfolk, Chesapeake and Hampton, near Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Our records do not say who was moving on orders, so we do not estimate a share. If you are, we offer a military discount and meet you outside the gate when a base will not admit a commercial carrier; see military vehicle transport.

Open or enclosed transport from California to Virginia

Most of these vehicles rode on open carriers, which cost the least. Enclosed transport makes sense for a classic, a new car you want delivered spotless or anything low to the ground, especially on the I-40 run through the desert Southwest in summer or through Tennessee and Virginia in winter. A tall SUV or lifted pickup may not fit every enclosed trailer, so check with us before you book one.

Getting the car ready to leave California

  • Measure what you have added. Roof boxes, bike racks, light bars and lift kits change the height; take off what you can before pickup.
  • Book two weeks ahead for December or March. Those were the lane’s busiest months, although the year was fairly even overall.
  • Keep the title handy. Virginia titles the car before it registers it, and a financed or leased car needs the lender’s paperwork.
  • Photograph the car and note any damage on the Bill of Lading at pickup.

Where the numbers come from

Neptune Auto Transport’s own records of California to Virginia orders placed from May 2022 to June 2026, without voided orders, are the source for every share and time on this page. Areas group ZIP codes by their first three digits. Transit runs from loading to delivery, and every shipment on this lane had both dates. The comparison with the westbound lane uses the same records for Virginia to California. Percentages are rounded to 100, and Navy locations are identified from ZIP codes and town names only. No individual order, customer or address is shown, and nothing here promises a price or a delivery date.

FAQ

California to Virginia car shipping FAQs

We don’t publish an average for this lane, because too few recent shipments exist to calculate a fair one. What our records do show is direction: since 2023, eastbound shipments from California to Virginia have cost more at the median than westbound shipments from Virginia to California. Your quote depends on the vehicle, the route and your timing.
About 6 days once the car is loaded, based on the median in our records, and roughly eight in ten cars arrived within 4 to 7 days. Hampton Roads deliveries ran a day or two longer than Northern Virginia. Before loading, allow 2 to 5 business days for pickup on standard service.
Yes, and on this lane most people do: SUVs outnumbered cars in our records, and about one vehicle in seven was a pickup. Tell us the exact model and any lift, rack or oversized tires when you ask for a quote, since height and length decide which trailer spot the vehicle needs.
Plan on more than a week once the car is loaded. The trip is roughly 2,700 miles. Our Hampton Roads deliveries ran to a median of about 7 to 8 days, and the ones from San Diego took longer than that. If you are picking up or delivering on base, we meet you outside the gate.
Title and register it within 30 days of moving; Virginia titles the car before it registers it, so bring the California title or your lender’s details. Cars garaged in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William or Stafford counties also need an emissions inspection, and Virginia requires an annual safety inspection.
About 39 to 41 hours of driving, depending on where you start: Los Angeles to Fairfax is roughly 2,650 miles and San Francisco to Fairfax about 2,820. That is five or six days on the road with fuel, hotels and meals. A carrier took 6 days at the median once loaded in our records.
There isn’t a strong season. Pickups were spread fairly evenly through the year in our records, with December and March slightly busier and no summer rush. That makes the timing flexible, though two weeks’ notice is still sensible for a coast-to-coast booking, especially for an SUV or pickup.
