Where cars leave California and where they land in New Jersey

California pickup areas. The Bay Area to North Jersey was the lane’s most common pairing.
Pickup areaShare of pickups
San Francisco Bay Area33%
Los Angeles County24%
San Diego County17%
Central Valley11%
Orange County7%
Sacramento region6%
Other areas2%

The Bay Area led, with pickups in Fremont, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Oakland, San Jose and a small cluster in Fairfield. Los Angeles County came next: Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena. This direction draws much more from San Diego County and the Central Valley than the westbound lane does. San Diego supplied 17 percent of eastbound pickups but took only 7 percent of our New Jersey to California deliveries, and the Central Valley (Stockton, Modesto, Lathrop, Madera and Bakersfield) supplied about one car in nine.

New Jersey delivery areas. North Jersey includes Newark and Jersey City; Central Jersey runs from Edison to Princeton and Trenton.
Delivery areaShare of deliveries
North Jersey (Hudson, Essex, Union, Bergen, Passaic)43%
Central Jersey (Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Ocean)37%
South Jersey13%
Morris and Sussex7%

North Jersey took the largest share: Jersey City, Newark, Kearny, Clifton, Edgewater, Little Falls and Parsippany. Central Jersey was close behind, from Edison, Piscataway, East Brunswick and Old Bridge down to Princeton and Trenton. One pattern stands out against the westbound lane. Monmouth County is one of the most common starting points for cars leaving New Jersey for California, yet it received almost none of the cars coming the other way.

How long does it take to ship a car from California to New Jersey?

In our shipment records, the median transit time was 6 days from the day the car was loaded to the day it was delivered, and close to nine in ten arrived within 5 to 9 days. The end of the trip made a difference: North Jersey deliveries ran to a 7-day median and Central and South Jersey deliveries to 6. At the California end, Los Angeles pickups ran to 6 days and Bay Area pickups to 7.

California to NJ car shipping is a true coast-to-coast haul. Los Angeles to Newark is about 2,780 miles by road and San Francisco to Newark about 2,900, most of it on I-80 across Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska before the run through Pennsylvania. Allow 2 to 5 business days for a carrier to reach you on standard service before any of that starts, or ask about expedited auto transport, which usually cuts the wait to 24 to 72 hours. All of these figures describe shipments already completed, not a promised delivery date.

  • Central Valley to North Jersey. Stockton, Modesto, Lathrop and Bakersfield sent most of their cars to North Jersey towns such as Kearny, Parsippany and Little Falls.

Moving from California to New Jersey: plates, insurance and tint

New Jersey gives new residents 60 days to transfer the title and registration, and the Motor Vehicle Commission wants a New Jersey policy in place first, with liability, personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage. Window film that was fine in California can be a problem on arrival: New Jersey allows tint on the windshield and front side windows only with an MVC medical exemption.

SUVs made up more than four in ten vehicles, one of the highest SUV shares among our busier lanes, and almost everything else was a car. A compact or mid-size SUV ships much like a sedan. A three-row SUV, a lifted one or one with a roof box takes more room on the trailer, so give us the exact model when you ask for a quote. Our guide to shipping an SUV or truck explains what changes.

Open or enclosed transport from California to New Jersey

Most of these cars rode on open carriers, the standard way to move a car across the country and the least expensive one. Choose enclosed car transport from California to New Jersey for a classic, an exotic or a car with fresh paint: the trip crosses desert heat, the Rockies and the Plains, and in winter the last few hundred miles run on salted roads. Enclosed trailers carry fewer cars and there are fewer of them, so book a few extra days ahead.

Before your pickup in California

  • Plan a meeting point on tight streets. Hillside streets in the Bay Area and permit-parking blocks around Los Angeles often cannot take a full-size carrier. A nearby wide road or shopping-center lot works.
  • Take out the FasTrak. A transponder left in the car can be read at tolls on the way east, and New Jersey uses E-ZPass anyway.
  • Keep the trunk light. Most carriers allow up to about 100 pounds below the window line, and their insurance covers the car, not its contents. Our guide to packing items inside your car has the details.
  • Photograph the car and note any damage before you sign the Bill of Lading with the driver.

How we counted

Every share and time on this page comes from Neptune Auto Transport’s own records of California to New Jersey orders placed from May 2022 to August 2026, with voided orders left out. Pickup and delivery areas group ZIP codes by their first three digits. Transit runs from loading to delivery and leaves out the one order with no delivery date. Percentages are rounded to total 100. No individual order, customer or address appears here, and nothing on this page promises a delivery date. The price table comes from a different source, recent comparable shipments dispatched in October 2026, and it is not a quote.

Sixty days. New Jersey asks new residents to transfer the title and registration within 60 days of moving, or before the out-of-state registration expires if that comes first, at a Motor Vehicle Commission appointment. If the car is financed or leased, the lender must release the title to the MVC first, so start early.
A few, kept light. Most carriers allow up to about 100 pounds in the trunk or cargo area, below the window line, and their cargo insurance covers the car rather than what is inside it. Leave out valuables, documents and anything flammable, and ask us before you pack.
