Marines leaving Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point for California

About one pickup in eight came from Jacksonville and Morehead City, the towns beside Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and a car from Holly Ridge, at the base’s southern edge, brought it closer to one in seven. Half of those cars went to San Diego County: Chula Vista, San Diego and Oceanside, the city outside Camp Pendleton. One went to Monterey, home of the Naval Postgraduate School. It looks like Marines heading west, but our records do not say who traveled on orders, so we do not claim a military share for this lane.

If you are moving on orders, you get our military discount, a pickup timed to your report date, and a meeting point outside the gate if the base won’t admit a car carrier. The military vehicle transport page explains how PCS moves work with us.

SUVs and crossovers43%

SUVs were about 43 percent of this lane, among the highest shares of our 50 busiest lanes, and cars 48 percent. Going east, SUVs are about a third. The typical vehicle was a 2015 model. If you are shipping an SUV from North Carolina to California, it rides like any car; tell us about a roof box, a bike rack or a lift kit, since those change its spot on the trailer.

Open or enclosed for a cross-country trip

An open carrier is the standard and least expensive way to go 2,400 miles. Enclosed transport keeps a classic, a sports car or a new vehicle out of six days of weather and road grime; it needs a few more days of notice, which fits the early booking this lane already calls for.

Book three weeks out, then prepare the car

  • Book about three weeks ahead. Half our customers on this lane booked 21 or more days before pickup, the longest lead time of any lane we run.
  • Remove toll tags and parking passes from the windshield before loading.
  • Leave about a quarter tank, and keep personal items light and below the window line; see our packing guide.
  • Photograph the car on pickup day and keep your copy of the Bill of Lading.
  • Leaving from a base? Car carriers usually can’t come on post, so plan to meet the driver outside the gate.

How we measured it

The shares and times here are drawn from Neptune Auto Transport’s records of North Carolina to California orders placed from May 2022 to July 2026, with voided orders removed. Areas group ZIP codes by their first three digits. Transit is counted from loading to delivery; one record with a delivery date before its pickup date was left out, and the median is 6 days either way. Lane comparisons use our 50 busiest lanes, and percentages are rounded to 100. No order, customer or address is shown, and nothing on this page promises a price or a delivery date.
