Tennessee to California Car Shipping
Tennessee to California auto transport, door to door, from Nashville, Memphis and East Tennessee to the Los Angeles area, the Bay Area and the rest of California. Our records put the median trip at 4 days.
Tennessee to California car shipping prices depend most on where in Tennessee you start. In recent months Memphis to Southern California ran about $1,100 to $1,350, while SUVs from Middle and East Tennessee ran about $1,300 to $1,800. In Neptune Auto Transport’s records, 57% of pickups were in the Nashville area and 30% in the Memphis area, most cars went to the Los Angeles area or the Bay Area, and the median trip took 4 days once loaded. Moving from Tennessee to California? Here is the cost, the timing and the smog check.
Memphis, Middle or East Tennessee: what the trip west costs
The table groups recent comparable shipments by where they started, for an operable vehicle on an open carrier, door to door, dispatched from May to October 2026. Each row rests on at least three separate shipments.
| Route and vehicle | Recent price range |
|---|---|
| Memphis area to Southern California, cars and SUVs | $1,100 to $1,350 |
| Middle and East Tennessee to Southern California, SUVs | $1,300 to $1,800 |
| Tennessee to the Bay Area and Sacramento, pickup trucks | $2,000 to $2,200 |
Across all of those months, most SUVs went for about $1,350 to $1,750, and the full SUV spread ran from $1,100 to $1,800. Memphis came in lowest because it starts the trip on I-40 at the western edge of the state, a couple of hundred miles closer to Los Angeles than Nashville. Pickups to Northern California cost the most, since they are heavier and the run is longer. If you ship a car from TN to CA, distance and vehicle size set most of the price, not a per-mile rate.
These are recent rates, not a fixed price, and they change through the year. Your quote depends on both addresses, the vehicle, your dates and which carriers are heading west. Every quote is free and all-inclusive, with nothing charged before a driver is booked.
Nashville and Memphis: where the westbound cars were picked up
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Nashville area and Middle Tennessee around it | 57% |
| Memphis area | 30% |
The Nashville area supplied 57% of pickups: Nashville six times, Murfreesboro twice, and Brentwood, Clarksville, Franklin, Madison and Hurricane Mills. The Memphis area supplied 30%: Memphis five times, plus Cordova and Bolivar. The other three cars came from Kingsport, Morristown and Columbia.
Cars from the Memphis area took 3 days at the median and cars from the Nashville area 4. Starting in East Tennessee? Knoxville and the Tri-Cities work the same way, door to door, with a longer run to the I-40 interchange first.
The Los Angeles area and the Bay Area took most of the cars
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles area | 39% |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 22% |
| Rest of California | 39% |
The Los Angeles area took 39% of the cars: Los Angeles and Pasadena twice each, then Long Beach, Calabasas, Reseda, North Hills and Cypress. The Bay Area took 22%: San Jose twice, Palo Alto, Danville and Livermore. The rest spread across the state, from San Diego and Encinitas to Redlands, Barstow, Corona, Bakersfield, Stockton, Sacramento and Shasta Lake.
Deliveries to the Los Angeles area and to the Bay Area both took 4 days at the median. In dense neighborhoods a full carrier often cannot reach the curb, so the driver calls ahead and meets you at a wider street or a nearby lot. That is still door-to-door service, just at the closest spot a truck can safely stop.
How long the drive west took once loaded: a 4-day median
From loading to delivery the median trip took 4 days. Thirteen of 22 cars arrived within 4 days and 15 within 5; a few trips with more stops took 6 to 9. Google puts Nashville to Los Angeles at about 2,004 miles, or 29 hours of driving on I-40 West, and Memphis is about 1,792 miles from Los Angeles. A carrier loads and unloads other cars along the way, which is why that becomes several days.
The pickup date is its own window. It depends on where in Tennessee the car sits, which carriers are loading westbound and how much room your dates allow, and we set it with you once a carrier is assigned. The median describes completed trips, not a promised arrival date.
Smog check, VIN check, 20 days: registering in California
California gives you 20 days after you become a resident to register a car brought in from another state, according to the California DMV. Two checks catch Tennessee drivers off guard. Most gasoline cars from model year 1976 on need a smog certificate from a California station, which Tennessee has not required since its testing ended in 2022. And the car needs a VIN verification on form REG 31, done by the DMV, a police officer or a licensed vehicle verifier.
One more rule matters for new cars: California will not register a car under two years old with fewer than 7,500 miles unless it was built to California emissions standards. Check the emissions label under the hood before you ship. Registration is separate from shipping, so book the DMV visit for after delivery.
Cars and SUVs going west, and when enclosed makes sense
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 57% |
| SUVs and a van | 43% |
Cars made up 57% of what we moved west, from a Toyota Corolla and a Scion FR-S to a Maserati Ghibli, a BMW M5 and a retired Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. SUVs were most of the rest, among them a Land Rover Defender, an Acura RDX, a Mercedes GLA and a Ford Explorer, plus one Ford Transit Connect van. The median model year was 2015.
An open carrier handles most of these, and it is what the price table describes. For a car like the Ghibli or the Defender, or anything with fresh paint, an enclosed trailer keeps the desert dust off across Arizona and New Mexico. Our open vs enclosed guide compares the two.
Moving east instead? Two-thirds of our California cars went to Nashville
Our California to Tennessee auto transport guide covers the opposite direction, where 66% of deliveries went to the Nashville area and most pickups were in Southern California. The median there was also 4 days. Heading somewhere other than California? How we measured it
The shares, medians and vehicle mix come from Neptune Auto Transport’s own Tennessee to California shipments picked up from August 2022 to July 2026, with voided orders and one off-road powersports vehicle left out. Areas are built from the first three digits of each ZIP code, and transit runs from loading to delivery, leaving out one trip that took more than 30 days. Percentages are rounded so each table adds to 100. The price table is separate: it reflects recent comparable shipments dispatched from May to October 2026, grouped by starting region, not our order records, and it is not a quote. No customer or address is named, and nothing here promises a price or a date.
