California to Tennessee Car Shipping
California to Tennessee auto transport, door to door, from Los Angeles, San Diego, the Inland Empire and Northern California to Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis. Our records put the median trip at 4 days.
California to Tennessee car shipping, in Neptune Auto Transport’s records, mostly runs from Southern California to the Nashville area. Two-thirds of the cars we delivered (66%) went to Nashville and the towns around it, against about half on our other routes into Tennessee, and three in four pickups were in the Los Angeles area, Orange County, San Diego or the Inland Empire. The median trip took 4 days once loaded. Lately most cars went for about $1,400 to $1,600 on an open carrier, door to door. Moving from California to Tennessee? Here is the cost, the timing and the paperwork.
Two-thirds went to the Nashville area: where California cars were delivered
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Nashville area and Middle Tennessee around it | 66% |
| Knoxville and East Tennessee | 17% |
| Memphis area and Southeast Tennessee | 17% |
The Nashville area took 66% of the cars: Nashville itself, then Antioch, Clarksville, Gallatin, Joelton, Brentwood, Franklin, Hendersonville, La Vergne, Old Hickory and Smyrna. On our other routes into Tennessee that share is closer to half. Deliveries there took 4 days at the median.
East Tennessee took 17%: three cars to Knoxville, one to Maryville and one to Kingsport, also 4 days at the median. The last 17% were four deliveries in and around Memphis, including Millington, and one in Calhoun, near Cleveland. Our Tennessee auto transport page covers every other part of the state.
Los Angeles to Nashville or Memphis: recent prices by vehicle
The table shows what operable vehicles cost to move on an open carrier, door to door, on recent comparable shipments dispatched from December 2025 to October 2026. Each row needs at least three separate shipments, so routes with fewer are left out of the rows but counted in the ranges below.
| Route and vehicle | Recent price range |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles to Nashville, car | $1,300 to $1,700 |
| Los Angeles to Nashville, SUV | $1,400 to $1,750 |
| Los Angeles to Nashville, pickup truck | $1,350 to $1,900 |
| Los Angeles to Memphis, car | $1,300 to $1,600 |
| Los Angeles to Memphis, SUV | $1,300 to $1,700 |
| Sacramento to Memphis, car | $1,600 to $1,800 |
| Sacramento to Nashville, pickup truck | $1,700 to $1,900 |
Across every route in those months, most cars went for about $1,400 to $1,600, most SUVs for $1,400 to $1,700 and most pickups for $1,450 to $1,900, with the full spread running from $1,300 to $1,950. From Los Angeles, Memphis usually priced a little below Nashville for the same kind of vehicle; it sits about 200 miles closer on I-40. If you plan to ship a car from CA to TN, those are the numbers to compare quotes against.
They are recent rates, not a fixed price, and they move through the year. Your quote depends on both addresses, the vehicle, your dates and which carriers are heading east. Every quote we send is free and all-inclusive, and nothing is charged until a driver is booked (how booking works).
Three in four from Southern California, Los Angeles to San Diego
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles area | 35% |
| Inland Empire | 17% |
| Orange County and San Diego County | 24% |
| Northern and Central California | 24% |
The Los Angeles area supplied 35% of pickups: Los Angeles three times, plus Santa Monica, Compton, Pomona, Lomita, La Habra, Ontario and Westlake Village. The Inland Empire added 17%, from Riverside and Loma Linda to Murrieta, Hemet and Phelan in the high desert, and Orange and San Diego counties 24%: Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna Niguel, Garden Grove, San Diego and Chula Vista.
The rest came from the north and the Central Valley: Sacramento twice, Vacaville, Martinez, Pleasanton, Fresno and Ceres. Altogether, 22 of 29 pickups were in Southern California.
Four days on I-40 from Los Angeles, and about the same from Sacramento
The median trip took 4 days from loading to delivery, and 27 of 29 cars arrived within 5 days. Pickups in Southern California and pickups farther north both took 4 days at the median, and so did the five cars that went from the Los Angeles area to the Nashville area.
Google puts the drive from Los Angeles to Nashville at about 2,004 miles, or 29 hours behind the wheel, almost all of it on I-40 East. Memphis is about 1,792 miles from Los Angeles, and Sacramento to Nashville runs about 2,276 miles by way of I-80. A carrier covers those miles with stops to load and unload other cars, which is why a 29-hour drive becomes a 4-day trip. Our cross-country shipping tips explain what to expect on a long haul.
The pickup date is a separate window. It depends on where in California the car is, which carriers are loading eastbound and how flexible your dates are. We agree that window with you once a carrier is assigned. The median describes completed trips; it is not a promised delivery date.
Half cars, half SUVs and pickups: choosing open or enclosed
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 52% |
| SUVs and pickup trucks | 48% |
Cars were just over half of what we moved east, from a Hyundai Accent and a Nissan Altima to a BMW 740, a 2016 Corvette and a 2000 Porsche 911. SUVs and pickups made up the rest: a Tesla Model X, a Lexus RX 350, two Audi Q3s and a Jeep Wrangler, plus four pickups, among them a Toyota Tacoma and a Ford F-250. The median model year was 2016.
Most of these cars rode an open carrier, the lower-cost choice and the one the price table describes. For a classic, a fresh paint job or something low like the Corvette, an enclosed trailer keeps off road grime on a trip this long; our open vs enclosed guide lays out the trade-off. Tell us about lift kits, roof racks or a camper shell when you book, because height changes which trailer spot a pickup can take.
Registering a California car in Tennessee: 30 days at the county clerk
Tennessee asks new residents to register within 30 days of moving. Title and registration both go through the county clerk in the county where you live, not a state office. Bring proof of identity and of your Tennessee address, your current California registration, and either the California title or, if you still owe on the car, your lender’s name and address, as the Tennessee Department of Revenue lists.
One step California drivers can drop: Tennessee no longer runs emissions tests. The state program ended in January 2022 and Nashville’s own program that February, so a car registered in Davidson County or anywhere else in the state skips the test. Registration is separate from shipping, so plan the clerk visit for after the car arrives.
Going back west? Our California-bound pickups started in Nashville and Memphis
For the trip the other way, our Tennessee to California car shipping guide shows where the westbound cars started: 57% in the Nashville area and 30% around Memphis. The median there was also 4 days, and recent prices from Memphis to Southern California came in lower than from Middle or East Tennessee. Shipping from Texas instead? How we measured it
The shares, medians and vehicle mix come from Neptune Auto Transport’s own California to Tennessee shipments picked up from June 2022 to January 2026, with voided orders left out. Areas are built from the first three digits of each ZIP code, transit runs from loading to delivery, and the comparison is against our other routes into Tennessee. Percentages are rounded so each table adds to 100. The price table is separate: it comes from recent comparable shipments on these routes dispatched from December 2025 to October 2026, not from our order records, and it is not a quote. No customer or address is named, and nothing here promises a price or a date.
