Georgia to Texas is really two lanes that share a starting point. Almost every car Neptune Auto Transport moves on it leaves metro Atlanta, and then it goes one of two ways: west on Interstate 20 to Dallas-Fort Worth, or southwest through Alabama and along the Gulf to Houston.

Two roads out of Atlanta

Atlanta to Dallas is about 780 miles, almost all of it on I-20 through Birmingham, Jackson and Shreveport. Atlanta to Houston is about 790 miles, usually I-85 to Montgomery, I-65 to Mobile and then I-10 across Louisiana. The distances are nearly identical, but the trucks are not: a carrier building a load for Dallas and one building a load for Houston are running different corridors, so your car is matched to whichever one serves your Texas address.

Austin and San Antonio sit close to 1,000 miles from Atlanta, and El Paso about 1,400, which puts it closer in driving time to the cross-country lanes than to the rest of this route.

Dallas-Fort Worth and Greater Houston together took three quarters of our Georgia to Texas deliveries, with DFW ahead. The most common single pairing was the north Atlanta suburbs to Dallas-Fort Worth, about a fifth of the lane on its own. Deliveries spread across the Metroplex, from Dallas and Fort Worth to McKinney, Frisco and Euless, and across Houston from the city to Katy and Fulshear.

The rest went to San Antonio, Austin, Killeen and Waco, and El Paso. None of them are more than a sliver of the lane, but they matter for timing: an Austin or San Antonio car can share a truck with Houston or Dallas deliveries and is dropped at the end of the run.

North metro Atlanta37%
South metro Atlanta25%

Metro Atlanta supplied close to nine in ten pickups. The north suburbs led, Norcross, Lawrenceville, Alpharetta and Duluth among them, followed by the south side and the city. About one pickup in eight came from elsewhere in Georgia: Savannah, Columbus, Macon and Augusta.

Where in the metro you start made a measurable difference. South-side pickups, in McDonough, Stockbridge, Riverdale and around the airport, ran a median of 1 day in transit, against 2 days for the north suburbs and the city. Our reading is that a south-side car starts right on the interstates that lead out of Georgia toward Texas, while a north-side pickup begins by crossing the whole metro.

How long does it take to ship a car from Georgia to Texas?

Based on our historical shipment data for this lane, the median loaded transit time was 2 days, and nine in ten shipments arrived within 1 to 3 days of pickup. Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston deliveries both ran to the 2-day median. That is quick for close to 800 miles, and it holds because both corridors are interstate end to end.

The pickup window comes before that: usually 2 to 5 business days from booking on standard service, or 24 to 72 hours with expedited auto transport. People on this lane plan further ahead than on our short Florida routes; half of our Georgia to Texas customers booked nine days or more before pickup. These figures describe past shipments and are not a guaranteed delivery time.

About one vehicle in six on this lane was a pickup truck, the highest share of any of our new Georgia or Florida routes. A full-size or lifted pickup takes more deck space and weight than a sedan, which shows up in the price, so tell us the exact model when you ask for a quote. Motorcycles move here too; see motorcycle shipping.

Most vehicles go on an open carrier. Enclosed is worth considering for a classic or a high-value car in spring, when hailstorms are common across North Texas and the I-20 corridor, and for anything with low ground clearance.

What it costs to ship a car from Georgia to Texas

We do not publish a price band for this lane. Too few cars and SUVs moved on it in the last 24 months to band fairly, and the typical price rose between 2022 and 2024, so an average over all years would understate a booking today. What moves the price:

  • Which Texas metro. Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston are almost the same distance from Atlanta. Austin, San Antonio and especially El Paso are further.
  • The vehicle. Pickups and full-size SUVs cost more than sedans, and an inoperable vehicle needs a winch.
  • Open or enclosed. Enclosed transport costs substantially more, because the trailer holds fewer vehicles and the equipment is scarcer.
  • Flexibility. A wider pickup window lets us put your car on a truck already running your corridor.

When to ship a car from Georgia to Texas

There is no strong season on this lane. In our records, pickups split 28 percent from January to April, 37 percent from May to August and 35 percent from September to December, so late winter and early spring were the easiest months to book. If your car is going to Houston between August and October, allow for hurricane season: the Gulf route runs along I-10 through Mobile and southern Louisiana, and carriers hold loads when a storm is forecast. The reverse trip keeps a different calendar: on our Texas to Georgia route, March to May was the busiest stretch and fall the quietest.

Before your pickup in Georgia

  • Plan for apartment and HOA rules. Many complexes and subdivisions around Atlanta will not let a full-size carrier through the gate. A nearby shopping-center lot works well, and the driver will call ahead to confirm it.
  • Leave a Peach Pass sticker where it is. A standard Peach Pass is stuck to the windshield and is ruined if you peel it off; deactivate it in your account if you will not use Georgia’s toll lanes again. A portable toll tag is different: take it out or seal it in its bag, since toll roads around Dallas and Houston can read it. Our Georgia to New York page has more on Peach Pass.
  • Plan the Texas paperwork. Texas asks new residents to register their vehicle within 30 days of moving; the Texas DMV lists what to bring.
  • Clear out the car and photograph it. Our guide to preparing your car for shipping covers the rest.

How these figures were calculated

These figures summarize Neptune Auto Transport records of Georgia to Texas orders from July 2022 to August 2026, with voided orders removed. Pickup and delivery areas are grouped by ZIP code prefix. Transit is counted from the day a carrier loaded the vehicle to the day it was delivered, for shipments with both dates confirmed, and removing incomplete records did not change the median. Percentages are rounded to sum to 100 in every table. The figures describe past shipments only: no individual order, customer or address is shown, and none of them guarantees a future price or delivery date.
