Virginia to Illinois Auto Transport
Door-to-door car shipping from Virginia to Illinois, a steady Midwest run that crosses the Alleghenies before it opens out.
Virginia to Illinois is a mid-length corridor move with a mountain section at the front and flat, fast interstate for the rest. Neptune arranges door-to-door transport on this lane with open and enclosed carriers, the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance verified before loading, and one all-inclusive price agreed up front.
The routing and the distances
From Northern Virginia the usual line is I-66 west to I-81, then I-68 and I-70 across Maryland and Pennsylvania, joining I-70 west through Ohio and Indiana into Illinois. From Richmond and Hampton Roads, drivers more often run I-64 west through West Virginia and pick up I-64 or I-70 across Indiana. Arlington to Chicago is roughly 700 miles, Richmond to Chicago about 790, and Norfolk to Chicago closer to 880.
The first two hundred miles are the slow part. Once a driver is past the Alleghenies and onto I-70, the rest of the run is flat, fast and predictable.
Weather at both ends, for different reasons
This lane has two distinct weather risks. The Allegheny section can ice up between December and March, the same as on the Ohio lane. Separately, the Chicago end brings lake-effect snow and genuine cold that can slow loading and unloading even when the highways are clear. A vehicle that has been sitting outside in a Chicago January may need a jump before it can be driven onto the trailer, which is worth mentioning when you book so the driver arrives prepared.
Who ships on this route
- Corporate relocations. Chicago and the Virginia federal and tech markets exchange people steadily, and those moves run year-round.
- University moves. Northwestern, the University of Chicago, Illinois and Illinois State draw from Virginia each August, with the reverse flow in May toward Virginia Tech, UVA and JMU.
- Seasonal and second-home moves. Illinois residents with places on the Virginia coast ship vehicles in both directions on a predictable rhythm.
- Purchased vehicles. The Chicago metro has a deep dealer and auction market that Virginia buyers use regularly.
Pickup and delivery on both ends
In Virginia, Arlington and Alexandria pickups almost always involve a short meet rather than a doorstep handover, because of garage clearances and permit parking. Richmond and Fredericksburg are the easiest origins on the I-95 corridor. Hampton Roads pickups add the harbor tunnels and are often scheduled early.
In Illinois, Chicago city addresses have their own access constraints, with narrow streets, alley-only access in parts and winter parking restrictions. Suburban Cook, DuPage and Lake County deliveries are more straightforward. See Illinois auto transport and Virginia auto transport.
Open or enclosed on this route
Open carrier transport carries the great majority of this lane. Enclosed auto transport is genuinely worth considering for a winter move of a high-value car, because both the Allegheny section and the Illinois end use road salt heavily. Book enclosed with more lead time than open.
