Michigan to Florida car shipping at a glance

Detroit to Orlando is about 1,160 miles, Detroit to Tampa about 1,180, and Detroit to Miami about 1,390. The route runs south through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia, over the mountain stretch north of Knoxville and through Atlanta, then down the length of Florida. This lane is overwhelmingly Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor: nearly three in four of our Michigan to Florida pickups. Warren, Canton, Dearborn, the Oakland County suburbs and Ann Arbor itself are straightforward door pickups close to I-75, I-94 or I-96. Grand Rapids and West Michigan are about an eighth of shipments and start a few hours further from I-75, which showed up in our records as slightly longer transit. Where Michigan cars go in Florida

Michigan deliveries are more spread out than on any of our other lanes into Florida. South Florida leads with only about a quarter, and the Gulf Coast is the real story: Tampa Bay and Southwest Florida together take 36 percent, from Sarasota and Bradenton to Port Charlotte, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and Naples. That is I-75 again: those cities sit right on it. Gainesville and Ocala in north central Florida take another 9 percent. Going north, the Florida to Michigan trip ran a day quicker at the median, and Orlando, a fifth of the deliveries here, supplied almost none of the northbound cars.

When Michigan ships to Florida: not when you would expect

Michigan is a classic snowbird state, so you might expect a fall rush. In our records the busiest stretch was May to August, with 48 percent of pickups, far ahead of September to December with 27 percent and January to April with 24 percent. That points to a lane driven by permanent moves, retirement relocations and summer purchases at least as much as by seasonal residents. It is a small sample, so read it as a pattern rather than a rule.

What it means for you: summer is the time to book early, two to three weeks ahead. Fall and early winter usually have more choice of dates on this lane than on the New York or Massachusetts lanes. • Where in Michigan. A Metro Detroit pickup is on I-75. Grand Rapids, Traverse City or the Upper Peninsula add real miles before the trip south begins.
• Where in Florida. A Gulf Coast delivery stays on I-75; the Atlantic side and Miami add distance.
• Winter. A December to March pickup can wait on lake-effect snow and icy roads, and carriers price in the risk of a slow first day.
• The vehicle and trailer. Pickups and vans cost more than a sedan; enclosed transport costs substantially more than open.
