Moving to Ohio: the out-of-state VIN inspection

Ohio gives new residents 30 days to move their title and registration over. The step people miss is the out-of-state VIN inspection: before a Florida title can become an Ohio title, the car has to be checked at an Ohio deputy registrar license agency or a licensed dealer. With the inspection done, you get the Ohio title at a county Clerk of Courts title office, then register the car and get plates. The Ohio BMV’s new Ohio residents page lists what to bring. Plan the inspection for after delivery, once the car is in Ohio.

Cars were two in three shipments, one of the highest car shares among our 75 busiest lanes, and SUVs fewer than one in five, one of the lowest. One motorcycle went from Fort Myers to Broadview Heights. The cars ranged from a 1998 sedan to a 2024 model, and one in five was 2010 or older.

Open or enclosed from Florida to Ohio

An open carrier handles most Florida to Ohio auto transport at the lowest cost. A car delivered to Northeast Ohio between November and March can meet snow and road salt on the last day, so enclosed transport is worth a look for a new car, a classic or a motorcycle. It costs more and needs a few more days of notice.

Book around the quiet fall

June to August and February to April each held a third of this lane’s pickups, and November had a small burst of its own. August to October held only one pickup in nine, and none at all in September or October. If you split the year between Florida and Ohio, our snowbird auto transport service books both directions.

  • Give us a pickup window of a few days, especially from February to April.
  • Remove your SunPass or E-PASS so tolls on the way north are not charged to you.
  • Clear out beach gear and loose items; a small, light load under the windows is the limit (details here).
  • Check the car with the driver in Ohio before you sign the Bill of Lading at delivery.

How we measured it

The numbers here are Neptune Auto Transport’s own: Florida to Ohio orders placed from November 2022 to May 2026, excluding voided ones. Areas group ZIP codes by their first three digits, and transit counts the days from loading to delivery, without one record that showed delivery on the pickup day. We date the seasons by pickup month and rank the lane among our 75 busiest. Percentages are rounded to add up to 100. No individual order or address is shown, and nothing on the page promises a price or a date.
