Colorado plates: 90 days, a VIN check, and emissions only around Denver

The Colorado DMV gives new residents 90 days to register the car, with Colorado insurance in place. A car coming from Texas needs a VIN verification on form DR 2698, done by Colorado law enforcement, a licensed Colorado dealer or a licensed emissions station.

An emissions test applies only to vehicles more than seven model years old registered in Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties and parts of Adams, Arapahoe, Larimer and Weld. Colorado Springs, in El Paso County, and Pueblo are outside that area, so a car delivered there skips the test.

Our Colorado to Texas guide covers the opposite direction, where three in four cars started in Denver and its suburbs, a third arrived the day after pickup and the median was also 2 days. For other routes out of Texas, see our Texas auto transport page.

How we measured it

For areas, transit and vehicles we used Neptune Auto Transport’s Texas to Colorado shipments picked up from October 2022 to May 2026, without voided orders or one camper. A ZIP code’s first three digits decide its area, transit runs from loading to delivery and leaves out one same-day record, and shares are rounded to 100. The price table is separate, built from recent comparable shipments on these routes dispatched October 2025 to October 2026; it is not our order data and not a quote. No customer or address is shown, and nothing promises a price or a date.
