North Carolina to New York Car Shipping
Car transport from North Carolina to New York, door to door, from Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Wilmington to Long Island, Buffalo, Rochester and the five boroughs. Most of our cars arrived the day after pickup.
North Carolina to New York car shipping is about as quick as an interstate move gets in Neptune Auto Transport’s records: 24 of 29 cars arrived the day after pickup. Most did not go to New York City. Only one in five did, against about four in ten on our other routes into New York; the rest went to Long Island, the Hudson Valley and upstate, from Buffalo and Rochester to Syracuse. If you are moving from North Carolina to New York, recent prices for a car were about $700.
How many days does a car take from North Carolina to New York?
Once the car was on the truck, the median trip took 1 day: 24 of 29 cars arrived the next day and the other five the day after. That held across the state and at both ends. Charlotte, Triangle and Triad pickups each took a day at the median, and so did deliveries to Long Island, New York City and upstate.
Driving it yourself is a long day. Google puts North Carolina to New York at about 507 miles and 8 hours on I-95, Raleigh to New York City at 504 miles, and Charlotte to New York City at 625 miles, close to 10 hours. The wait before loading is usually the longer part: on standard service a carrier is typically assigned 2 to 5 business days after you book, and expedited auto transport shortens it.
Long Island, upstate or the five boroughs: where did the cars go?
| Delivery area | Share of deliveries |
|---|---|
| Long Island | 23% |
| Western New York (Buffalo, Rochester and nearby) | 23% |
| New York City | 20% |
| Hudson Valley and Westchester | 17% |
| Central New York, the Southern Tier and the Capital Region | 17% |
Only one in five cars went to New York City, against about 42% on our other routes into New York: the Bronx took three, Queens two and Brooklyn one. Heading south is a different picture: half the cars on our New York to North Carolina route started in the city.
Upstate took four in ten. Western New York took seven, Buffalo and Rochester twice each plus Webster, Lake View and Great Valley, and the rest of upstate five, from Syracuse, Fulton and Freeville to Elmira and East Greenbush. Long Island took seven, from Baldwin and West Hempstead to Shirley and East Moriches, and the Hudson Valley five, including Middletown, Nanuet and West Harrison.
Our Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Long Island pages cover pickup and delivery there. For an address in the city, the New York auto transport page explains how drivers handle permit parking and narrow blocks.
Which parts of North Carolina did our New York shipments leave from?
| Pickup area | Share of pickups |
|---|---|
| Charlotte region | 27% |
| Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Cary) | 23% |
| Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Lexington) | 17% |
| Wilmington and the coast | 17% |
| Fayetteville, the Sandhills and the mountains | 16% |
Pickups came from the whole state rather than one metro. The Charlotte region supplied eight, from Charlotte itself to Mooresville, Gastonia and Salisbury; the Triangle seven, including Raleigh three times, Cary and Durham; and the Triad five, among them Greensboro and High Point.
The coast and the Sandhills added nine more: Wilmington three times, Oak Island and Jacksonville near Camp Lejeune, and Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Aberdeen and Clinton. If you are moving on military orders, our military vehicle transport page covers the military discount.
Car, SUV or pickup: what North Carolina to New York cost this year
Each row below stands on at least three separate recent shipments, dispatched from October 2025 to October 2026, for a car that runs, on an open carrier, door to door.
| Route and vehicle | Recent price range |
|---|---|
| Charlotte to New York City, car | $650 to $700 |
| Raleigh area and the east (Raleigh, Kenly, Rocky Mount) to New York City, car | $700 to $800 |
| Charlotte region and the Foothills to New York City, SUV | $700 to $850 |
| Raleigh area to New York City and Long Island, SUV | $700 to $750 |
| North Carolina to New York, pickup truck | $750 to $1,000 |
Across all ten car listings the range was $650 to $800, and most were about $700. For SUVs the Raleigh area, about 120 road miles closer to New York City, cost the same or less than the Charlotte region. Pickups ran about $200 to $250 more than cars, most of them $900 to $950.
Only two listings went upstate or to the Hudson Valley, near Rochester and New Paltz, too few to price those trips on their own; a specialist quotes them one at a time. For any other pair of ZIP codes, the car shipping cost calculator gives a quick range. Treat the table as recent history: prices shift with the season, fuel and the number of trucks heading north, and your quote is built from your two addresses, the vehicle and your date.
When do you need New York plates after a move from North Carolina?
The New York DMV expects a new resident to register within 30 days, with New York insurance in place first, proof of ownership and proof that sales tax has been paid. Apply for a New York driver license within 30 days too.
One detail catches North Carolina drivers out. New York accepts another state’s inspection only if that state issues an inspection sticker, and North Carolina has recorded inspections electronically, with no windshield sticker, since 2008. So plan on a New York State inspection soon after you register; the DMV gives a 10-day extension for it.
Open or enclosed for a 500-mile run up I-95
| Vehicle type | Share of shipments |
|---|---|
| Cars and sedans | 63% |
| SUVs, a van, a pickup and a motorcycle | 37% |
Most of what we moved north were cars, from two Civics and an Accord to a Porsche 911, a 1983 Mercedes SL and a 1999 Camaro, alongside SUVs such as a Ford Escape and a Mercedes GLS 600, a Kia Carnival and a Harley-Davidson. Open transport is the default on a trip this short and it is what the prices above describe. For a collector car, enclosed auto transport costs more but keeps it covered from loading to delivery, and our motorcycle shipping page covers bikes.
Toll tags and other prep before an I-95 pickup
The route north crosses toll roads, so take a portable toll tag such as E-ZPass out of the car or seal it in its read-prevention bag. E-ZPass terms say tags must come out of a vehicle under tow, or the account can be charged. Leave a quarter tank or less, take out personal items and anything loose, and walk around the car with the driver before you sign the bill of lading.
How we measured it
Our figures on areas, timing and vehicles come from Neptune Auto Transport’s North Carolina to New York shipments picked up from November 2022 to July 2026: 30 orders, with no voided ones on this route. Each area groups ZIP codes by their first three digits; 29 trips are timed from loading to delivery, one same-day record left out; the comparison is with our other routes into New York; shares are rounded to 100. The price table uses another source, recent comparable shipments dispatched October 2025 to October 2026, and is not a quote.
