Door-to-doorMedian transit 1 dayOpen or enclosed

North Carolina to Georgia car shipping is a one-day trip in Neptune Auto Transport’s records: 19 of 21 timed cars arrived the day after pickup. About a third left the Raleigh-Durham area and about a third the Charlotte region, and eight in ten went to metro Atlanta, from Duluth and Decatur to Lithonia. If you are moving from North Carolina to Georgia, recent prices were $450 to $550 for a car and mostly $550 to $600 for an SUV or a pickup, with Charlotte-area pickups costing less than Raleigh-area ones.

Is North Carolina to Georgia really a one-day trip?

Once loaded, almost always. The median was 1 day, and only two of the 21 timed trips took longer, one at 2 days and one at 3. Pickups from the Charlotte region and from Raleigh-Durham each took a day at the median, and so did deliveries across metro Atlanta. A handful of records even show delivery on the pickup date; we leave those out of the timing, so the one-day figure is the cautious one.

For comparison, Google’s driving estimate puts Charlotte to Atlanta at 245 miles, under 4 hours on I-85, and Raleigh to Atlanta at 407 miles, about 6 hours. The wait for a truck is the longer part of the job: on standard service a carrier is usually assigned 2 to 5 business days after you book, and expedited auto transport brings that forward.

Charlotte or Raleigh: does the starting city change the price?

For pickup trucks it did. Short runs like this move with which carriers are already heading down I-85 that week, so a quote can differ, but every row below rests on at least three separate shipments dispatched from September to October 2026, for a vehicle that runs, on an open carrier, door to door.

North Carolina to Georgia car shipping cost by area and vehicle, recent prices from September to October 2026

Charlotte region and the west (Charlotte, Concord, Hickory) to metro Atlanta, pickup truck$450 to $600

Raleigh-Durham area (Raleigh, Knightdale, Clayton) to metro Atlanta, SUV$550

Pickups from the Charlotte side, about 230 to 290 miles from Atlanta, ran $450 to $600, while those from the Raleigh area, roughly 400 to 430 miles away, ran $550 to $650. Across North Carolina, SUVs ran $500 to $700 and pickups $450 to $700, most of both $550 to $600. Savannah showed up often in these listings, from Charlotte, Concord, Raleigh and Clayton, at about the same prices as Atlanta.

Duluth, Decatur and Lithonia: the Atlanta side of the trip

Where our North Carolina to Georgia deliveries went, shipments picked up from September 2022 to August 2026
Delivery areaShare of deliveries
Metro Atlanta81%
Elsewhere in Georgia (north Georgia, Savannah)19%

Twenty-one of 26 cars went to metro Atlanta, spread across the suburbs rather than downtown: Duluth four times, Decatur three, Tucker and Lithonia twice each, and one each to Norcross, Suwanee, Snellville, Conyers, Cumming, Canton, Douglasville and Fayetteville. Two went into Atlanta itself. The other five went to north Georgia, Dawsonville, Ellijay and Monroe, and to Savannah twice.

Our Atlanta and Savannah pages cover delivery at that end. Shipping onward from Georgia later? Our Georgia to New York route starts from the same suburbs.

The Raleigh-Durham area supplied nine pickups, four of them from Clayton, plus Raleigh twice, Cary, Kenly and Rougemont. The Charlotte region supplied eight, five from Concord, with Charlotte, Lincolnton and Belmont. The rest came from High Point and Archdale near Greensboro, from Castle Hayne and Hampstead on the Wilmington coast, from Fayetteville twice, and from Fletcher in the mountains.

How long can you drive on North Carolina plates in Georgia?

Thirty days. The Georgia Department of Revenue gives new residents 30 days from the move to title and register, at the County Tag Office rather than a state office, and you need a Georgia driver’s license or ID before the tag office will register the car. Bring Form MV-1, proof of Georgia insurance and your North Carolina title.

The fee most people do not expect is the title ad valorem tax: a one-time tax that is 3% of the car’s fair market value for a new resident, against 7% on a purchase. Miss the 30 days and a penalty is added to it. If a lender holds your title, the tag office takes the lender’s Form T-17 and your current registration and asks the lender for the title by mail, as the DOR explains. In 13 metro Atlanta counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Cobb, the car also needs a Georgia emissions test before registration; the three newest model years are exempt.

Cars made up just under half of what we moved, from a Kia Rio and three Hyundai Elantras to a 2024 Audi A3 and a 1991 Cadillac Eldorado. The rest were SUVs such as a Chevrolet Tahoe, a Lincoln Navigator and two RAV4s, three vans and one Ram 1500 pickup. If you ship an SUV or a van from North Carolina to Georgia, it rides on the same open carriers as a car; tell us the height and any roof rack when you ask for a quote.

Open transport fits a trip this short, and it is what the prices above describe. For a collector car like that Eldorado, enclosed auto transport keeps it covered the whole way, and door-to-door service brings the truck as close to both addresses as it can safely go.

How we measured it

Our figures on areas, timing and vehicles come from Neptune Auto Transport’s North Carolina to Georgia shipments picked up from September 2022 to August 2026: 26 orders, none of them voided. Each area groups ZIP codes by their first three digits, and one record without a ZIP is placed by its town; 21 trips are timed from loading to delivery, with five same-day records left out; shares are rounded to 100. The price table uses a different source, recent comparable shipments dispatched from September to October 2026, and it is not a quote.

FAQ

Questions about shipping a car from North Carolina to Georgia

Recently, cars ran $450 to $550 on an open carrier, door to door, and SUVs and pickup trucks mostly $550 to $600. Charlotte-area pickups cost less, $450 to $600, than Raleigh-area ones at $550 to $650. Your price depends on both addresses, the vehicle and your pickup date.
Usually one day once the car is on the truck: 19 of our 21 timed trips arrived the day after pickup, from Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte alike. Before that comes the pickup window, usually 2 to 5 business days on standard service, or less with expedited service.
Georgia gives new residents 30 days from the move to title and register the car at the County Tag Office. Get a Georgia driver’s license first, bring Form MV-1 and Georgia insurance, and expect a one-time title ad valorem tax of 3% of the car’s value. A penalty applies after 30 days.
On a trip this short, driving often costs less: Charlotte to Atlanta is 245 miles and under 4 hours by Google’s estimate. Shipping makes sense when you have two cars and one driver, a car you would rather not put miles on, or a move day already full. Recent Charlotte-region car listings ran $450 to $550.
Yes. Savannah took two of our 26 North Carolina to Georgia deliveries, and it appeared often in recent listings from Charlotte, Concord, Raleigh and Clayton. Those cars ran $450 to $550 and SUVs $500 to $600, about what Atlanta cost. The trip still took about a day once loaded.
Yes. Three of our 26 shipments on this route were vans, two Ford Transit Connects and a ProMaster, carried on open trailers like the cars. Tell us the van’s height, any roof rack or shelving and whether it is empty, and a specialist will quote it on its own.
You, or an adult you authorize, should be there at both ends to hand over the keys and sign the bill of lading after checking the car with the driver. On a one-day trip the delivery often comes the next day, so line someone up in Georgia before the car leaves North Carolina.
