Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth or out to Kyle: which Texas metros got the Ohio cars?

No single metro dominated. The Houston area took seven cars, two of them to Katy and the others to Pearland, Richmond, Magnolia and Houston itself. Dallas-Fort Worth took six, Prosper twice plus Frisco, Irving, Garland and Haltom City. The Austin area took six as well, three of them to Kyle and the rest to Austin and Manor. The last six spread out: San Antonio twice, then Midland, Beaumont, Daingerfield and Fort Hood.

Our Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio pages cover delivery in each metro. If the car is going to a base, our military vehicle transport page explains the military discount.

Yes, in our records. The median trip took 3 days once loaded, and 21 of 24 timed trips took 2 to 4. Pickups around Columbus, in Cincinnati and Dayton, and in Cleveland, Akron and the rest of Northeast Ohio each took 3 days at the median, and so did deliveries to Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and the Austin area. That even spread of pickups is unlike our Ohio to Florida route, where the Cleveland area led.

Behind the wheel it is two long days. Google’s driving estimate puts Columbus to Houston at 1,156 miles, about 17 hours on I-40, Columbus to Dallas at 1,041 miles, and Cincinnati to Austin at 1,129. Loading comes after the pickup window: on standard service a carrier is usually assigned 2 to 5 business days after you book, and expedited auto transport cuts that wait.

Almost two in three were cars, from a Chevrolet Aveo and two Mitsubishi Mirages to a Mercedes E 350 and a 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65. The rest were SUVs such as a Nissan Rogue and two 2023 Tesla Model Ys, plus two pickups and two vans.

In the recent listings, pickup trucks from Ohio to the Houston area and Dallas ran $1,150 to $1,800, most of them $1,200 to $1,600, about $300 above cars at the median. A full-size truck takes more of the trailer’s space and weight limit, so it costs more to haul. Our guide to shipping an SUV or truck covers what else changes.

What does Texas ask of a car that arrives with Ohio plates?

Texas gives a new resident 30 days to register. At your county tax office you file Form 130-U with the Ohio title, proof of Texas liability insurance (at least 30/60/25) and, where it applies, a passing emissions report. For a car brought from another state, TxDMV has you certify the VIN yourself on that form unless an emissions or commercial inspection is required.

Older guides get two things wrong. A personal car has not needed a Texas safety inspection since January 1, 2025. Emissions testing still comes before registration in 17 counties, Harris, Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson among them; Hays County, where Kyle sits, is not on that list. Sales tax on a car you bring with you is either $90 or the difference between what you paid in Ohio and the Texas rate. Shipping into Texas from the West instead? A Mercedes CL65 or a Corolla: choosing the trailer for the trip south

Open transport is what the prices above describe and what nearly every car on this route rode on. For a classic or a high-value car, enclosed auto transport keeps it under cover from Ohio to Texas at a higher price, and classic car transport covers older models. Either way the car goes door to door, as close to each address as a full-size truck can safely get.

Before pickup, leave about a quarter tank, take out loose items, and either remove a portable E-ZPass or seal it in its read-prevention bag. Photograph the car and check it with the driver against the bill of lading at both ends.

How we measured it

Our figures on areas, timing and vehicles come from Neptune Auto Transport’s Ohio to Texas shipments picked up from June 2022 to August 2026: 25 orders, after leaving out one voided order and one semi tractor. Each area groups ZIP codes by their first three digits; 24 trips are timed from loading to delivery, with one that has no delivery date left out; shares are rounded to 100. The price table comes from a different source, recent comparable shipments dispatched from May to October 2026, and it is not a quote.

FAQ

Questions about shipping a car from Ohio to Texas

Recently, cars ran $1,050 to $1,300, most of them $1,100 to $1,200, on an open carrier, door to door. SUVs ran $1,050 to $1,450 and pickup trucks $1,150 to $1,800, about $300 more than cars. Your own price depends on the two addresses, the vehicle and the dates you pick.
About 3 days once the car is loaded. That was the median in our records, and 21 of 24 timed trips took 2 to 4 days, from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland alike. The pickup window comes first, usually 2 to 5 business days on standard service, shorter with expedited service.
Within 30 days of moving, take Form 130-U, your Ohio title, proof of Texas insurance and any required emissions report to your county tax office. Personal cars no longer need a safety inspection, but 17 counties require an emissions test first. Expect either a $90 new resident tax or the sales tax difference.
Driving from Columbus to Houston is 1,156 miles by Google’s estimate, about 17 hours at the wheel plus fuel, a night in a hotel and wear on the car. Shipping a car recently cost $1,050 to $1,300, door to door. Which comes out cheaper depends on your car and what your time is worth.
Recent pickup listings from Ohio to the Houston area and Dallas ran $1,150 to $1,800, most of them $1,200 to $1,600. That was about $300 more than a car at the median, because a full-size pickup uses more of the trailer’s space and weight limit. A lifted or modified truck is priced on its own.
Yes. The Austin area took about a quarter of our Ohio to Texas deliveries, three of them to Kyle and the rest to Austin and Manor, and those trips took 3 days at the median. Hays County, home to Kyle, has no emissions test before registration, while Travis County does.
Yes, by the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance. Neptune only assigns carriers with at least $100,000 of cargo coverage, usually $100,000 to $250,000, and finds one with higher limits for a more valuable car. You get the carrier’s insurance certificate before pickup, and a damage claim goes to that insurer.
