Snow and ice close or slow I-81 several times in most seasons, and the secondary roads climbing out of the valley can stay bad for a day or two after the interstate itself is clear. • Grandin Village and Raleigh Court. Walkable neighborhoods with moderate street widths and driveways. Usually workable, occasionally a short meet.
• Hollins and North Roanoke. Suburban development close to the I-581 and I-81 junction. The easiest access in the valley and the quickest turnaround for a carrier.
• Salem and Vinton. Neighboring communities served on the same runs, with generally good suburban access.
