Spending the winter in Florida? Shipping an Indiana car south

If you spend the winter in Florida and fly down, shipping the car means it is waiting when you land. Our snowbird auto transport service books the trip south and the return, and the fall and winter booking guide walks through timing.

One thing our own records cannot tell you is when the season peaks: we have too few Indiana to Florida orders to confirm a busy season. Booking earlier gives you more carriers to choose from, and a fixed date is what expedited auto transport is for. For the trip back north, see our Florida to Indiana route.

Is two days typical for a car going from Indiana to Florida?

Yes, in our records: the median trip took 2 days once loaded, and 24 of 27 cars arrived within 3. Deliveries to South Florida took 2 days at the median and those to the Gulf Coast, from Tampa Bay to Naples, about 3. Indianapolis-area pickups took 2.

Driving it is a long day and a half: Google puts Indiana to Florida at about 1,108 miles and 16.5 hours on I-65 and I-75, and Indianapolis to Tampa at 989 miles. Allow for the pickup window before the trip itself; on standard service a carrier is usually assigned within 2 to 5 business days of booking.

How many of the Indiana cars were SUVs?

Vehicles we shipped from Indiana to Florida, shipments picked up from July 2022 to August 2026
Vehicle typeShare of shipments
SUVs52%
Cars, sedans and two pickups48%

A little over half were SUVs as booked: a Nissan Armada, an Acura MDX, a Ford Edge, a Lexus RX, an Infiniti QX60 and a Jaguar E-Pace among them. The cars ran from a Yaris and a Sentra to a Cadillac XTS, an Alfa Romeo Giulia and a 1982 Corvette, and two were Dodge Ram pickups.

An open carrier fits most of them. For a classic like that Corvette, classic car transport or enclosed auto transport keeps it covered on the way down I-65 and I-75.

What does Florida charge to register a car brought from Indiana?

Florida wants an out-of-state car registered within 10 days of starting a job, enrolling children in a public school or otherwise becoming a resident, according to FLHSMV. You will need Florida insurance from a Florida-licensed agent first, and the VIN checked on form HSMV 82040 or 82042 by a law enforcement officer or a licensed Florida dealer.

If you have never had a Florida plate to transfer, expect the one-time $225 initial registration fee on top of the usual title and plate costs. If you are not becoming a Florida resident, ask your county tax collector whether you need to register at all.

How we measured it

Our shares, medians and vehicle mix come from Neptune Auto Transport’s Indiana to Florida shipments picked up from July 2022 to August 2026, 27 orders, none voided. Each area is a set of ZIP codes sharing their first three digits, trips are timed from loading to delivery, the Indianapolis comparison is with our other routes out of Indiana, and shares are rounded to total 100. Vehicle types are as booked, so two Dodge Calibers count as SUVs. The price table comes from a separate source, recent comparable shipments dispatched October 2025 to October 2026, and is not a quote.

Recently, cars from the Indianapolis area ran $950 to $1,100 and from Northern Indiana $1,050 to $1,100, on an open carrier, door to door. SUVs ran $950 to $1,200 and pickup trucks $1,500 to $1,700. The two addresses, the vehicle and your date set the final quote.
About 2 days once the car is loaded: that was the median in our records, and 24 of 27 cars arrived within 3 days. Gulf Coast deliveries took about 3. On standard service, add 2 to 5 business days for a carrier to be assigned before pickup.
It is your call. Driving is about 1,108 miles and 16 to 17 hours by Google’s estimate, usually two days on the road. Shipping took about 2 days once loaded in our records and saves those miles on the car while you fly. Our snowbird service can book the return trip too.
About 1,147 miles and 17 hours of driving by Google’s estimate, mostly on I-75. Southwest Florida, from Naples to Punta Gorda and Fort Myers, took about a fifth of our Indiana to Florida deliveries, and recent Carmel to Naples listings fell inside the $950 to $1,100 car range.
An open carrier, flexible dates, a running vehicle and a pickup address a full-size truck can reach. Enclosed transport, a fixed date, a pickup truck or a car that does not run all cost more. Booking earlier also gives you more carriers to choose from.
Yes, by the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance, which we require to be at least $100,000; it is usually $100,000 to $250,000, and for a more valuable car we find a carrier with higher limits. You get the carrier’s insurance certificate, and a damage claim goes to that insurer.
A car that has never had a Florida plate pays a one-time $225 initial registration fee on top of the usual title and plate costs. Florida wants the car registered within 10 days of becoming a resident, with Florida insurance and a VIN check on form HSMV 82040 or 82042.
The same way, in reverse. Our Florida to Indiana route covers the trip north, where South Florida supplied about half the pickups and the median trip also took 2 days. If you book both legs, our snowbird service handles them together.
