The most important piece of paper in your shipment
The Bill of Lading (often shortened to BOL) is the official document that records your vehicle's condition and the terms of its transport. It is signed at pickup and again at delivery, and it is your primary protection if any question about condition arises.
Think of it as the receipt and condition report rolled into one. Treat it with care.
What the Bill of Lading records
The BOL documents the vehicle's condition at pickup — noting any existing scratches, dents, chips or other marks, often with a diagram and photos. It also lists the pickup and delivery details and the parties involved.
At delivery, the same document is used to confirm the vehicle arrived in the same condition, with both you and the driver signing off.
Why the inspection matters so much
Never rush or skip the inspection. At pickup, walk around the vehicle with the driver and make sure every existing mark is noted. At delivery, inspect again against the pickup report and your own photos before you sign.
If you sign the delivery BOL without noting an issue, it becomes much harder to address later. A careful two-minute inspection on each end is the simplest way to protect yourself.
Keep your copy
Hold on to your copy of the Bill of Lading after delivery. Combined with your dated photos, it gives you a complete record of the shipment. With a reputable carrier and a careful inspection, the BOL is usually just good paperwork — but it is exactly the protection you want to have.
